if I go and push on the left of the shifter in 3rd, 4th, 5th gears it'll move the **** to the left and the shifter **** would appear as though it were in a different gear (i.e. 3rd would appear in 1st, 4th in 2nd .. etc etc)
but i know it's not actually changing gears because there is absolutely zero grinding or anything to that effect ...
are there are kind of adjustment screws attached to the stock shifter? ... any thoughts?

There is no adjustability in the stock shifter handle itself. Some of the aftermarket shifters do have tremendous adjustability and any of them are an improvement over the stock unit. I have a BPP shifter in my Z06 and love it! It has 18 different positions that it can be put in and is easily tailored to the drivers preference. It is the most adjustable shifter out there and has two handles that you can choose from. One is straight and the other is angled, plus it can be mounted on either side of the shaft and with four holes to choose from the two mounting bolts can be configured in a wide variety of choices in addition to having a variety of spring sizes to choose from.
There is a great article on this shifter on Z06vette.com and it will give you a great idea of what it offers and how easy it is to install. I highly reccomend reading this article so that you can see what an aftermarket shifter has to offer. After the rowboat feeling stock unit, almost anything is an improvement, but what I like most is the precision that you feel moving from gear to gear, and how easily one can find the right gear due to the centering action that these units offer.
