That's why I'm thinking something else like a fork or something internal. Still can't discount the driver either but until they can show me that it shifts normally or how to, it's stays at the dealer until it's fixed. Keep ya posted!
If it is a syncro, it may not grind. I don't know for sure if the original syncros are a composite gear. It will feel like it won't go into gear unless you force it. A bent fork is possible, yes.

I've had cars that will either upshift or downshift without an issue (but not both) that had bad synchros. Some would grind going one way and not other. If the car's under warranty then Chevy will figure it out. If they come back with "could not duplicate" then take your service writer for a ride and show him (I find that's the BEST way to get stuff fixed.)

Also you should be able to find an rpm if the clutch is completely released that you can force it to go. If it won't go then I don't know what the problem is. I would go with t56gens advice.

BTW I'm not saying you should grind the heck out of the gears forcing it to go.

Default Shifting

I just picked up a Z16 with 5100 miles. After reading about your problem I took it out tonight to see if I could duplicate your problem but mine shifts 6th to 5th like butter. I tried it at least 10 times at various speeds and never had a problem. Sorry to hear about yours but, I also vote for a bent shifting fork. If you have no luck with the dealer I have a local guy who is excellent and can at least provide some additional advice based on 10 years of pure Corvette experience. Good luck!

The dealer told me when I had my problem that all my shift forks were bent. They also told me that they replaced all of them with steel shift forks. I was happy to get it fixed, but only thought about that comment later. I found the comment sort of interesting, like they were not steel before. Does anyone have any info. on the stock materials. I've heard along the way that GM in 04 had straightened out the problem.

I read somewhere on here that the shift forks were changed to steel in mid '03 so I might be looking for the same fix. We'll see on Tuesday when I take it in.

First off, I've never had any tranny issues. But I remembered Steve Row posting some pictures of the shift fork replacements in his 02 Z.

Steve wrote: "Joe Hughes at Criswell rebuilt my trans and installed the steel (iron) shift fork along with syncro's and a lot of other parts.

Check out these pictures of the rebuild."

Yes, I have an early 03, bought it in July 03', I remember hearing the same thing. Take a look on your drivers door on the inside end. I believe a manufacturers date is there.

Is it possible you're pushing the lever to far to the right? You might be trying to shift the car into reverse.

Out saturday XXX mph downshift into 5th with fluid motion. I have a B&M ripper so maybe that helped. I do not recall having this problem with the stock shifter. It is still under warranty, get is checked out. With no disrespect maybe you should practice, afterall you just got it (great job!)
I sucked when I first got this car, remember this car is a brute. Its no VW, Good Luck.

It took me about a month to get used to the shifter. Before that I had a lot of trouble downshifting quickly into the gear that I wanted. Once you get used to it, it works fine. I like the stock shifter now. The key is not to force the shifter and to let the centering springs do the work.

Did you ever solve this issue? I'm having the same problem with my car not being able to downshift into 5th either. I've been driving manuals since I could walk and I know it's not my driving technique. Would be inerested to hear how you solved your issue before I tear into my tranny.
Thanks.
