Default Overheating in the Cold???

Lately the temp gauge seems to be going bizurk.

It will go all the way up to 250-260 degrees and then all the sudden shoot back down to 185-190.

All this in the very cold weather we've been getting around 25-45 degrees outside.

Anybody know what's the potential problem??

Default Thermostat

Sounds like your thermostat is bad (sticking) and is staying closed too long.

Make sure your coolent level is correct.

The coolent will surge and cause irregular temps if at low level.

Definitely a sticking thermostat. Safest thing to do is replace it. It's cheap insurance against doing major damage to your engine. Don't ask me how I know (luckily not on the vette though).

I would check coolant level first and make sure there are no air pockets in the cooling system. If you still have a problem then replace the Thermostat. Pressure test the system and look for leaks at the hoses and hose connections and water pump. If the problem continues after that then, its most likely a head gasket. Good luck with it.

As long as you are at it, check your freeze level of your antifreeze protection also.

and, since you're going that route, depending on age/miles, consider replacing the hoses as well. bub

Yep, thermo, but go ahead check the whole system. Thermos are easy to replace; little messy with coolant, but easy to do. Give me a shout if you need help.

Like every one says.... change the stat. I'd do it asap before it sticks and stays stuck. Nice weather to get your hands wet... Good luck.

Will do.

I've been wanting to get a 180 T-stat anyways.
Thanks Chris, more then likely after Christmas I'll give you a call.
