I bought Jim Helm's set of HRE Mallett wheels and am in the process of cleaning them. The inside of the rim (barrel) is heavly coated with brake dust. What is this part of the wheel susposed to look like? I'm pretty sure it isn't polished and I don't believe it's painted. My plan is to bead blast them and maybe have the barrel powder coated black. Any thoughts?
Start with a good cleaning, than go to a wheel bush (Sears has them, they are the red fiber kind) to get them back down to the new aluminum. Then get some polishing compound and a buffing wheel for a drill motor and go to town. Follow this with a coiuple of goood coats of paist wax. This is what I did to mine and they look great. It takes some time but is well worth the effort.
HRE's do not normally polish thier barrells at least mine weren't. To powder coat them you will have to have them taken apart and unlees that is done buy a wheel shop that is a bad idea.

Clean them up and polish the snot out of them. HRE does not polish the inner barrels, unless you specifically ask them to. When done through a coat of wheel wax on them and your good to go.
