I was looking at the consumer reports ratings on the 2002 c5 corvette. Now, I don't put a lot of weight on what consumer reports says about cars, but there was something in the 2002 rating that I wanted to ask about.
Is there any reason behind their BLACK Circle/1 rating on the 02 LS1 engine? Most of the other LS1 ratings are RED Circle/5 star -- the 02 was the only year to get a black circle.
Was there a common problem with the 02 they are talking about ?
The Consumer Reports reliability ratings are based upon owner's responses, so at least some 02 owners have had problems. I have an 02 as well (6 spd manual), and don't have any oil burning problems, but I don't abuse my motor either. I had read in one of the Corvette magazines about a problem with oil burning during several years, including the 02. They fixed it in later years, and apparently it did not show up on all cars.

Thanks!
BTW, I have a 02
Yeah, I've got the '02 as well. No problems with mine...
I have heard that the '01 model had oil-burning issues. Maybe CR got their years mixed up. And maybe they should stick to testing toasters.
I've got an 02 MN6 with 35,104 miles and runs about 5,000 miles between required oil changes (15-20% on oil life indicator) and doesn't burn any oil between changes.
I'll just add to the consumer confidence here...My 02, built in March of 02 has just over 20k on the clock and burns no oil and has had zero problems. (looking for wood to knock on ).
My 02 was built in July 01 and has 49k on it. I have no oil burning issues. It does seem to have the piston slap issue when cold but runs great so I'm not going to mess with it.
