Default Change It Or Leave It?

Mobil1 has been in since last July/2000 miles. I'm going to drive it down to Florida in 3 weeks, a 2500 round trip. Car runs perfect, but sits alot. It should be ok, eh?

What does your DIC read on the percent of oil life left? Use the computer as a basis for change. The engineers put good logarythms in the formula to protect our engines.

If it will make you feel better change it. The new synthetic oils are not damaged or do not degrade over that short of a time. I would drive it and then change after get back.

I have been changing the oil in my 2004, every 2,500 miles. Change the old oil prior to your trip.

I change the oil in mine every 1,500 miles, which is about what I put on it in a year. I know it's overkill, but it gives me peace-of-mind and I sleep well at night.

Leave it in. I change my C5's oil once per year (5000-5500 miles) and the D.I.C. normally shows that I have 20+% oil life remaining. Don't sweat the small stuff - leave it in and enjoy your trip.

Hi John -

Change it. If not for the oil quality, do it just to take a good look around prior to the trip.

Of course, should you demonstrate that good of planning ahead, it will snow and you would drive the truck anyhow....

Call me tonight. It should be good Thursday for coming out and changing the oil on the lift.

best regards -

I am in the oil business and can say that your oil is fine and will go much further than 3000 miles between changes. I change mine every 3000 give or take a few miles or if I drag raced I will change it afterwards everytime. That oil will not break down and lose it's lubricating properties anything less than 3000 is overkill but I know it makes all feel better.

Just my .02

Go by the DIC... today's oils last a long, long time, and the engineers know what they're doing with the recommended intervals. Heck, my turbocharged audi has a 10,000 mile interval for changes. (also synthetic oil).

I admit that I still change my oil more frequently than the manufacturer's recomendations, but at 2000 miles you're just wasting money and resources.

I'd drive it and then change when you get back. Should have plenty of life left in the oil at this point.

and go by the DIC, that's what it's there for Unless you race the car, I don't understand why people don't just follow the DIC.

I have posted this many times:
AS a former GM engineer working on the C5, I can assure you that hundreds of scenarios went into the development of the oil life monitoring system.. The algorithms "designed in" will still give you a ten % safety net. Actual oil testing under all types of extremes helped to develop this system.. anyone changing oil before the monitoring system says to is like flushing money down the toilet. There is something to be said for 1960's thinking... and that is "get some indoor plumbing, this is the New millennium" ... Oil life monitor % down to 0 or one year, whatever comes first. You still have a 10% safety blanket.
