Looking to bolt on horsepower to my 2004 Z and thought I'd start with the air intake. Looking for advice from anyone that's worked with air intake systems. Basically looking for a system that will maximize air flow/horsepower with top-end price around $500. Any suggestions?
There are a ton of air systems out there.
But, I like the Haltech, the Blackwing, and Vararam systems.
If you live in an area that you might by accident or otherwise drive through deep water: stay away from the Vararam system. The other two would be much better.
Do a search on the 3 listed systems and you'll find a ton of info.

Only if you drive like the Skipper on the SS Minnow will a Veraram suck water. Best performance for the buck. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
I had the vararam, i liked it but ill be looking for a halltech TRAP for my next car. Done really belive what most people THINK about the vararam sucking in water, the water would need to travel pretty high to damage the motor.

What is the difference between the Trap and Stinger from Halltech?

The stinger and TRAP are the same intakes, its just the TRAP has an additional piece that places the filter lower down. On the stinger there is a "air bridge" that connects to the MAF and the MAF directly to the air filter, on the TRAP there is the "air bridge" to the MAF, then the MAF to another piece and then that connects to the air filter.
There is a guy that posts on here, that has a TRAP + 160stat + tune and he made something like 38Xrwhp. My plan on my last car was to make 400rwhp with bolt ons only (no cam/n2o/ported heads).
Ironically that guy bought the car i was looking at (02 Zo6), and he also bought the intake i was looking at(TRAP).
I had the vararam on my last car (02 Zo6) and it was a bitch to install. On my next car ill try something else, hopefully i can find a used TRAP

I didn't see the TRAP on Halltechs web site. Any link?

I agree with you. And I ran the vararam on my car through many FL midday downpours w/o any problems for over 2 years.
But, if you live in a area prone to flooding and drive in the rain; you must be very aware of road conditions and any depth of water that may be there. Otherwise you run the risk of injecting water into the scoops. And if your significant other drives the car you must also take into account their driving habits as well. YOU may avoid all the offending water obstacles but, that does not mean your better half will do the same.
I've got the Halltech Stinger on my 02 Z. I also did the "cold air mod" for it. I did those 2 mods, and a Corsa Exhaust System with a x pipe. After i had the car dyno tuned, my car puts 387hp to the wheels! Gotta love it!

Thanks.
You're right on the money for the Callaway Honker dude...
The first thing I did to my '03 was the Zip Tie Mod, which produced a noticeable gain in power. Denver altitude likes as much air as possible. Yesterday I installed a Vararam (yes, it is a PITA), and took it out for over an hour to let the computer figure out the new air flows. There's another noticeable gain over the Zip Tie. Now I wish I'd had dynos done for all three scenarios. Guess I'll wait till I supercharge the beast.
