Default 5 Point harnesses in C5

To all in Corvette Forum land, I have been quite confused on how you would put racing harnesses in a late model (2001-2003) Z06 . There is a solid back to the seats with no pass through under the headrest. Are there any suggestions.

FIRST, you need a solid crossbar that bolts in between the B pillars on a coupe, or if you have a vert, get a real roll bar installed. Then you have a sold place to loop the shoulder harnesses. Unless you are quite small, the shoulder harnesses need to go over the seat rather than through the slot under the headrest [ no slot in base model or ZO6 seats, only 'Sport'seats] Dont bother with Hardbar brand crossbar, as it pushes the seatback forward, not a problem if your less than 5 feet 7, but most of us need the seat to be in rear range of position, Crotch strap needs to mount to a bar that bolts in on top of and between the front seat mounting bolts, inless youhave 6 point harness, then you use the 2 front bolts. Again depending on body size, you may need to slot the seat bottom for the crotch strap. Remember the lower strap is not to hold your privates, but rather to hold the lap belt down toward your legs and to keep it from moving up to soft belly area. Out side of lap belt can bolt in where you remove the stock reel from, Inner seat side can bolt to the seat where the factory '3 point socket is bolted in, or you can drill into the center frame tunnel and bolt through. To do that you need to pull the exhaaust and the chassis closure plate to gain acces to the inside of the main tunnel.

Been there, done it all, then couldn't stand the forward location of the Hardbar, so pulled it all out until I get a welded in 4 point roll bar....hopefully this spring Then my Schroth 6 point harness goes back in. Several other cmpanies make bolt-in cross bars that fit far enough back that full seat motion is available. If we end up not welding in a roll bar we will choose the R&D crossbar........FYI, from their website ...

R and D racing crossbar

The C5"CROSS-BAR" mounts high like our C4 bar, with mounting brackets that prevent the bar from rotating and allows the bar to become an integral part of the car. There are anchor straps that run down to the seat mounting studs to insure that the bar does not rotate and makes the bar rock solid. The bar is high enough to insure that bracket flexing is not an issue, but low enough to keep a clear view in the rear mirror. There are no modifications to made to your car, and the "Cross-bar" can be removed in approximately 15 minutes. Also included with each bar is a center mounted camera mount that attaches to the bottom side of the bar. The design criteria of our C4 bar, carries over to the C5 units, in that the seats may be moved and reclined rearward as far as needed. This allows the driver and passenger to travel comfortably during the week and be ready to race on Saturday.

The "CROSS-BAR" is made from 1-1/2" square medium weight tubing and weighs approximately 14 lbs with brackets and hardware.

Harness bar Brey-Krause to attache behind the seats to the seat belt attachment on the B-piller.

Brey-Krause seat belt attachments - a

a 6 point belt is what you want not a 5-point. You sit on the sub belts, do not have the sub belt come up from in front of the seat, not secure and safe.

the sub belt of the 5-point tends to pinch the family jewls so the two sub belts of the 6-point is a better choice. Some guys ware baseball cups for protection too.

5 point is fine if your drag racing. Although as stated above, protect the jewels. I have a bar bolted under the seat so the 5th point comes up. On my rollbar I have tabs welded for the harness so that's pretty easy. Now on a ZO6 there are no upper seat cut-outs I strongly urge you, no matter what type racing get a STERNUM STRAP.

The back of the Z06 seat has a hole in it similar to the Sports seats. It just takes a quick trip to a competent upholsterer to take advantage of it. Make Loveof6 send you a picture.
