Oil consumption hasnt been an issue up to this point....

They have it wrong. Typical for Consumer Reports and enthusiast vehicles. They should stick to Taurus and Volvos and toasters. The 2002 is noted for its strong engine. The 2000 and 2001 had serious oil consumption problems.

My '01 is a DD and has no oil issues. I guess most cars (unless they are lemons) wouldn't have oil issues if you take proper care of them and change the oil at regular recommended intervals

Ummmm, sort of true. A significant number of the 2001's had oil consumption issues, proper care notwithstanding. There are some threads in here that you can find which will provide the background for you. It was significant. GM did have a fix, but the car had to eat lots of oil before they would go with it.
