I've got the XTec HID kit from RevExtreme in my 01 vert. I love the kit but one of the ballasts has just died on me. I think it has been too long for me to expect a replacement from them (it's been almost a year and half) I already had one replaced by RevExtreme in the first year. This is the other original ballast that's dead. It must have been a bad run as I've read that most people on the forum don't have problems with these kits.
Can I replace the ballast with any other HID ballast from say phillips or does anyone know if I have to go with another Xtec ballast?
check with where you got the kit from first, just incase cause you never know. Check ebay for ballasts. They have some nice replacements. do a search for xenon ballasts. A bunch will come up. Goodluck.
i don't see a problem running two different ballasts, they should all be around 42 watt each. Kind of like running two different brand bulbs. Might i suggest a name brand one next time like phillips or hella - i went through the same ordeal you did with non OEM ballasts.
I think the Xtec Kit is supposed to have 5 year warranty I believe. I ordered a kit from them a couple months ago but it's started acting up on me so I just sent it back for a refund.
I believe the Xtec ballast are Hella brand ballast. I had a old HID kit that had Hella ballast and when my Xtec kit came in I compared them and looked pretty much the same. Hope this helps.

Why did the ballist go out? I've had mine actively on two cars for about 5 years now... no issues. I know sometimes they "just go out"...
But if you are comfortable enough and can open it (after removing from the power supply of course), check it for moisture. I had water get into one of mine when I mounted it to the inside of the wheel well of the C5. Surprisingly, it didn't blow up... just shut down. I took a heat gun and dried it out... no issues since... been over a year now.
How dangerous is it to open one of these ballasts up? Is there some kind of capacitor in them that stores charge and hence makes them unsafe to play with? Is removing the unit from the car and hence the supply of power enough to keep one from being hurt? I thought that these things were just specialized types of transformers. Right?

Thanks.
Big deal, just don't start touching things! I had this ballast, and one got water in it. I took it apart and let it dry out for a couple days in the sun. Put it back together and it worked fine. I recommend sealing these units completely, besides mounting them in a place where they won't get wet.
