I drove a 2001 Z06 yesterday with less than 2000 miles. Seems to have a slight valve noise that you can here from drivers seat. Is this a problem? Our 99 did not seem to have this valve noise.
I have experienced bent valves. I over reved my 1999 Firehawk by down shifting to second instead of fourth at 90 mph and bent the valves. The sound was a lot more noticable than the noise from the Z06. The first time I noticed the Z06 making the noise, I have to admit I was scared the valves were damaged, the noise is very similar. The only things that made me believe the Z06 was ok, is the fact I know I never had over reved it and there were several posts on this formum from other owners with the same concern that believe it is a natuaral behaviour of the Z06.
I have goten to the point that I can now hear when the car is 1/2qt down by the valve train sound increace. The cam profil is more radical in the ZO6 so there is more noise. I will trade noise for power any time with in reason. Ric
Ah HA! I just started noticing this noise myself last night for the first time and was really starting to sweat it. Glad to hear that it "appears" to be normal. The car just hit 500 miles and I have not overrevved it.
I attributed this noise to the roller tappets and roller rockers. Together they make a "sewing machine" clatter which gives ME the impression that all is ok with the world/engine--freedom from friction is accompined with noise from that freedom. With zillions of little roller pieces moving constatly, is there any wonder that some sound eminates from all of them moving in concert?
I do not have it with my Z06 - but I did have it with my 2000 Coupe. I heard an engine flutter under normal acceleration that drove me nuts. There was no extra noise at idle or normal cruise, but the flutter was really grinding. In fact - thats why I bought a new car! I think some LS1/6 engines have the noise and some don't.
