Default Run Flats

I do not usually get involved in the tire arguments. But I have been a member of this forum a couple of years. There is a lot of name calling on tire brands etc.
First of all I am a little prejudiced since I am an employee of Goodyear 37 yrs. My plant was originally named Kelly Springfield and Goodyear has been the parent company. We have been renamed now to Goodyear.
Some members are buying foreign made tires. I believe as it stands now Goodyear and Cooper are the only American owned companies. I for one cannot see taking a foreign made tire and putting it on the only American Sports Car, The Corvette.
To call the EMT tires Run Craps, seems kind of mis-leading. The Goodyear EMT tires were designed for the Corvette. Most of the noise is due to alignment and flat spots caused by that. Also the tires do what they are designed for. I do not have to worry about my wife on the side of the road with a flat. A little noise is minor. The runflat is thick also.
I won’t go into Quality because there is no comparison. I have been able to see the Goodyear F1 EMT built in the Oklahoma plant. The audit of that process is very detailed.

Enough said here is a site that says it all with a little humor:

They are a great tire for what they are but they are noisy. I'm going with the other Goodyear non runflats next. Oh, I don't have alignment problems or flat spots.

I appreciate your loyalty to your company. However, I just replaced my runflats with non-runflats and it's like I'm driving a new car. The runflat ride is extremely punishing. Also, the bump steer problem with the runflat is downright dangerous. The pricing of the Goodyear runflat is also alarming. Far too pricey for a chunk of rubber. When and if Goodyear makes a better EMT I'll switch back. In the meantime, I'll keep my AAA and cell phone handy.

HA! That was some funny stuff right there, I don't care who you are!!

At the rate America's losing domestic manufacturing business, ALL tires will be made overseas or south of the border very soon. Sad but true state of affairs.

I'll stick with the AMERICAN made Goodyears.

When my runflats go flat, I'm going to buy my tires at Pep Boys. They always have a tire sale - 4 for $99.

If the Goodyear EMTs are the tire you really prefer on your C5, then congrats. They do offer a level of security that is unmatched by any other runflat maker (at least in terms of how far you can travel with zero air pressure). But my experience with the original ones on my car were they were noisy, wore out way too fast, and to replace them cost way too much. I made the switch to a set of Firestones and they offered a much better ride and the handling has been very, very good, plus they were cheaper to purchase. I will admit though that they do not offer the range of the Goodyears. I also run a set of non-runflats and they are just an amazing difference compared to the EMTs.

Like was mentioned above, if Goodyear makes a better runflat, I may eventually switch back. Until then, I'll enjoy my non-runflats and keep the cell phone and plug kit handy.

I agree, if you NEED high performance run flats (that "perform" when deflated..... like on a serious-use car), the Goodyear is the best tire available. What little performance you give up when inflated is more than compensated for with its outstanding deflated perf.

i.e. if you can find a set of street tires that you can do faster lap times with (with one at zero pressure) I’d like to know what it is.

I have both a set of Goodyear EMT’s and KD’s mounted up, how I shoe the car depends on what I plan to do with it. But, for all round use (for me), I vote for the EMT’s.

realistically, how many times have you HAD a flat tire? I have had maybe 5 in 25 years of driving. when the runflats are done, I'm going to go to a good set of non runflats and risk it

Noise never bothered me at all. And I have a hard time understanding how it could bother others who have the aftermarket exhausts on their cars as many always want the louder exhausts. Yet they are bothered by the tire noise. If someone was going to be racing their car and had performance issues then I could understand why they would want a change of tires.

I really like the fact that I don't have to worry about having the car towed if I get a flat. Towing can be a horrible experience in itself and that's worth the runflats.

I guess to each his or her own.

Sadly, And, as much as I love the GS D3's, I will continue to purchase other tire brands that provide a wider range of available tire sizes, especially in the mega wide 355mm size for my 19X13's.

If you want a car that rides and sounds like a Buick, buy a Buick. I want to HEAR and FEEL the road when I'm in my Corvette.

I have had four or five flats (on other vehicles...bad karma) in the past four years. Most of them have been in the cold Indiana winters. Personally, I am glad that I can drive my Vette and not worry about being a woman on a dark street trying to change a tire, or waiting for my husband to rescue me or waiting on the motor club to show up and wonder if the dude is a creep when he gets there. So, I will put up with the noise, hard ride, and expense for this security. But I do wish Goodyear could come up with some improvements on the tires.
