And with the speeds that modern cars can attain + increased distractions, traffic and reduced driving skills, he is just begging for disaster. One of my daughter's teenage friends stated to her that he could take me in his Doge Ram hemi pickup, I didn't even respond as I'm not contributing to a tragedy in the making.. As it is, one of her girl friends has already put her SUV on it's roof in a 35mph area, and several have had fender benders...Teenage driving is abyssmal in the US.. I lived in South Africa for 11 years and you couldn't drive a car until you were 18, might not be a bad idea for the US...
Oddly enough - I never seem to get challenged by rice or ponies (except once about a week after I got the car back in '02). The few times I have been taunted/challenged/harrassed it has been by BMW M3s and BMW 545s. Only took one of those challenges and got really lucky to have seen the trooper before the unlucky guy in the M3 did. I'm sure all the cop saw was the M3 blowing past me doing triple digits...
Who tries to get you to street race more... the Ricers or the Ponies?
Its a compliment. Everyone knows that Corvettes are fast and people want to show that they have a "fast" car also. I ignore them as there is always danger when street racing. Even if I drive perfectly, some fool can get in the way and the Lord only knows what the other driver is likely to do. I have seen accidents at the drag strip and shudder to think about something simlar on a city street or even freeway. These cars will get to 100mph fater than most cars can get to 60. Legality is a minor issue as we all know its illegal for the reasons I just stated. Safety first is my rule.
That said, I get the "treatment" from lots of different idiots. No prevalent type.
As an aside, this weekend, my wife's son visited us from his tour in the USAF. His thoughts on the vette were typical. He thought of it as a muscle car and described how his Alfa was the ideal little sports car. I took him through some lonely road twisties and even had the chance to slide the car a bit. He changed his opinion.
I just my first vette and am waiting for it's arrival via transport (only 400 miles away now), but the Mustangs and Camaros are always giving me the revs and wanting to race me in the 7. Sometimes I will entertain them but mostly not. The ricers know how well the car runs so they leave it alone.
I agree with the above though, most of the time they just like your car and want to see you jump on the gas.
I had 2 guys on crotch rockets try me one day. We went back and forth up to about 95. I slowed to about 80 and this kid went by me doing a wheelie!. When I caught up to him I gave him the "I'm not worthy" bow. He laughed and we both gave the other a thumbs up and away he went in a cloud of dust. Just some highway fun.
If you dont ever go to the track then It just will be a big supprise an awfull lot of those 'stangs will GOOOOO For the most part the few ricers that will are few and far apart! Thank god and what I think is really going on with this phenomonon is these young guys think that the corvette is like some angel of death they are in total awe and always just want to see them goooooooo! Way more mustangs than you will EVER hear on this forum (except for the guys that go to the track) will go every bit as fast as you will! They are easy to mod and waaay cheeper to do it!
And that's exactly what some of them are tyring to prove. Some of these cars are really fast and they sucker an overly-proud vette owner into thinking they are just another punk with a ricer - then they spank you.
Not everyone is into "owning a vette" and just wants to build a fast car that they can play with. I agree with the guy who posted about the Talon - never underestimate the other car.
I have a friend with an aftermarket turbo on a VR6 GTI. Car is pretty well guttet, weights 2300lbs and makes 365 FWHP. I think that car would take care of most of our vettes, particularly from a rolling start.
Perfectly put, thank you.
Some of you need to stop wiping your cars with diapers and drive the damn things.

At least stop believing that just because drive a vette you can't be beaten. ANYTHING can be made fast. And just because somethign is ugly or ratty looking doesn't mean it is slow. There are a ton of guys out there who build nasty looking, but incredibly fast cars just to screw with people in the street. They are few and far between, but with how easy it is to hide N20 and you can put a centrifigal supercharger/turbo under a stock hood, you can't underestimate ANYTHING.
For the record, I have nothing against polishers and showing your car. I very much enjoy the amount of work it takes to make/keep a car beautiful. But a vette that runs low-13/high-12s is not an incredibly fast car in the real street scene - we all need to realize it just doesn't take that much anymore to get a car deep in the 12s, or quicker.
tempting though it may sometimes be, do not risk all you own by engaging some idiot you neither know nor care about in a street race. besides being illegal it is extremely dangerous to the idiots who race as well as unsuspecting public. locally here, on a road posted 40 mph, a 35 y/o family man was killed by some @sshole who felt he had something to prove by racing. it ain't worth it; no way no how. bub
I don't know, but for me I own a vette because I like to drive it, work on it, polish it, race it, have fun with it. I don't want to put my life and others' at risk to prove to some young gun that my car is faster or have him prove to me his is.
There is ALWAYS going to be a faster car, better driver, or both out there, and the better driver's will most likely not bother to instigate.
I get ricers. Never had a Mustang challenge. I never take the challenge on the street. But they Do try. I don't want to put my life and others' at risk to prove to some young gun that my car is faster or have him prove to me his is. I do spank rice at the track regularly. And I did get my azz handed to me by a Mustang with a Whipple twin-screw even though I cut a perfect .000 light. I had him the first 30 feet...
