Most of the challenges I have had have been ricers and pickup truck drivers. I can understand the ricers...they believe everything they read on their forums about how easy it is to blow away Corvettes, etc, but the pick up truck guys just slay me! The most common are the Dodge boys with their hemis...apparently they really believe the commercials! I just can't understand why they can't do the math and figure out that 345 hp in a 5,000 pound truck will not beat 405 hp in a 3,000 pound car! Don't even get me started on the turbo diesel pick ups...I have a friend who is convinced that his stock Chevy pickup with the turbo diesel can run with any Corvette...go figure!
I am not a proponent of street racing, but I have had to really employ some discipline to avoid educating some of these people.
I have to go now...I am picking up a Vtech sticker for my Z06...should be good for at least 50 hp!
I was driving from GA to FL last night....and I had an epiphany. I had some 2 rice mobiles challenge me and one Mustang while going up I-95. Usually the ricers will leave me alone when they pull up next to me bacuase I use the "Point and Laugh" technique to say, "No, I'm not racing you.!"
Then the Msutangs want to challenge me. I see mroe of these in this area and give them a bit more respect, but still say no.
Who tries to get you to street race more... the Ricers or the Ponies?
I just love the little ricers. They think they have it big.
i have to admit...a 350z tried me tonight. finnaly i gave in and smoked him. then he tried again! this time i let him go and while he was at full throttle, i flew past. haha. I LOVE THIS CAR!
The ricers like to rev a bit. The stangs and me usually just exchange looks of admiration (though, I'm really feeling sorry for the poor soul ).
The bigger problem is when I pass someone, they speed up. I don't know why or what they are thinking, but it's usually a soccor mamma in a tahoe or minivan, idiot in a truck, or some dude in a late model pseudo-sports car. The trucks are a joke: they slam their gas pedals and accelerate like a turtle, where I just shoot by. One idiot broad did this recently to me on a 2 lane merge into one lane. Part of the mentality of driving the bigger SUVs I think is "I'm king of the road."

2 summers ago, I was at Dragway 42 (in OH) making runs in my LT-4. I lined up against a turbo Diesel truck (I think it was a Dodge). I ran was running 12.90s and this truck was running 13.1x. I was very impressed. A big, heavy, dually, truck, running very deep 13s! Not for me, but I can appreciate the performane. If one was to race one of these on a non-prepped surface (I didn't say street), I am not sure who would have won.
Not quite sure about the Yugo's. I do have a buddy of mine in Jacksonville that has one. He riced it out just becuase it's wrong.
Anwyays, I get a more stangs than rice challenging me. It's probably 75% & 25% respectively. I don't know who is faster, me or them, becuase I never street race and don't have time to go to the track. I jsut wanted to see what everyone was putting up with on the streets.
As a Mustang driver, I have had some A-hole corvette drivers (2) try me. One was when I was driving my 79 which was fully built. I was only about 20 yrs old so was still street racing and not thinking about the consequences). THis was about 8 yrs ago and it was a C4. I ignored him and ignored him until he started screaming at me obscenities (must have been in his 30's)about how mustangs are Sht and I was a punk and should have gotten a real car, and I looked like a pssy, etc, Then I revved it up to about 7500 (had 8000rpm rev limit on a modded 2.8L cologne V6 turbo) looked over and launched. Took him by about 5 cars got up to about 60-70 and shut it down. He turned off before I could see his reaction.
I saw him a week later, he had the same girl in his car and I just looked at him with a "got something to say?" look and he just acted like he didn't see me.
Later I had a 81 mustang with a 4 cyl (88 horses, with 44 of them lame) and put some 88 gt wheels and new tires on it to have new tires while I was steadily prepping it for paint. A guy in a C5 pulled up next to me and starts revving the **** out of his engine. I look over and not only does he have a woman in the passenger seat but a little girl on his lap, I lost it and cussed him out so bad the lady covered the little girls face and her mouth was wide open in awe. Then I told him, "tell you what, my buddy and I just finished piecing together a 1987 Buick Regal with a V6, If you think your car is such hot ****, I'll meet you anytime any where and I'll run you for 20 grand. If you can't afford it put your car up" the guy looked at me and didn';t have anything to say.
Didn't tell him the Regal was a Limited Turbo with a T-60 turbo and FMIC and over 600 hp.
So, yeah it's the driver and not the car.
More people can affrod a Mustang so you will run into more people with them, so the chances of one of them being a complete jack *** is higher.
I have run into 2 jerks driving vettes amongst probably over 100 cool people driving vettes.
I have run into tens of dozens of jerks driving mustangs out of thousands I have passed or drivin next to.
Ricers are along the same lines. I have a 1993 Mustang 4 cyl now, that I am piecing together parts to make it turboed, but anyway it has I think 90 hp . A guy two days ago in a modded WRX STi goes flying past me and gives me a look like he just beat me. I wasn't even trying to race the retard tho, I know I have a slow car and when I have fast cars don't go out proving it every day to every jack hole who revs his engine at me. If they think I am a wuss for not racing, fine, good, not like I care.
Sorry for the long post but it really is the driver, not the car.
! Don't even get me started on the turbo diesel pick ups...I have a friend who is convinced that his stock Chevy pickup with the turbo diesel can run with any Corvette...go figure!
He is aparently been watching Spike TV and the power block on saturdays/sundays and watching Trucks! Yea Diesel trucks can fast but, they need to put in a good deal of mods.
I always get a kick out of threads like this because there are so many opinions (some educated and some that are not). If you are going to engage in a performance battle with a ricer or Mustang be very aware of what you may be up against and you still run the risk of getting your butt handed to you. Ricer/Import type cars are generally lighter than our Vettes. Many of them are all wheel drive which in a traction limited environment can be a huge advantage. In a ricer you typically don't hear big duration camshafts, you don't hear flowmaster exhausts, you don't hear nitrous and essentially until you hit the finish line you simply don't know what you are up against. There have been many days at the dragstrip where you see a stock appearing Talon or the like and expect it to run 13's or 14's and the board lights up with a 10.20 ET at 135+ and your like...DAMN...never saw that coming.
This next comment is not going to sit well with some forum members but I believe that the Mustang/5.0 market is WAY bigger when it comes to drag racing and street racing than our Corvettes. If you have not followed the 5.0 scene it is a very power segment of the auto enthusiasts. I personally do not own a Mustang or 5.0 but I am very aware that a stock appearing Mustang can be made to run deep 8 second quarter mile times while looking entirely stock rolling down the road. Be aware!

Gotta luv that Garbage can hanging out Da' Back called an exhaust, and Dem pwetty Neon lights, oh and dont forget the decals all over, Now them are some real Power Adders
Lots of those around here - sound like overgrown lawnmowers to me
I tease my son about his 98 Mustang, but its strong for a low budget buildup. a e-bay used supercharger and 3.90 gears made a nice combo. Added a few supension upgrades and some quality tuning.
