I've finally calmed down enough to hopefully realize that everything will be fine. I made the mistake of going and getting my windows tinted 2 days ago. It was kind of a wet rainy day so I couldn't really get a good look at the job that was done. From the inside it looked good, but when the rain finally stopped and I walked around my car, all I saw was this:
I've already been to a body shop and they think that they can be buffed out. They (window tinters) also put a pretty good scratch in the drivers door, which the auto body place was skeptical if they could buff that out as well. It might have to go in for paint.
You know, I just don't get people. How do you not put something over the car when you work on it. I never even put my own hands on my car unless there is a microfiber towel between my hand and the paint. Have some respect, not just for the car, but to the owner. If it's evident that the car is in great shape and taken good care of, why should you be any different when you work on it.
They said that they have tool belts on, but that there is never any metal that can touch the car. Anything, and everything (especially on a black car) can scratch the paint. I just hope everything works out. I'm running out of places that I can trust to work on my car. Thank god there is a wonderful Corvette service center here, otherwise I would be screwed.
I am definitely not paying for it! My car does has a few blemishes, I won't lie, but these pictures don't do it any justice as to how bad it actually is. The lip of the back end is completely marred. Just visualize the worst of the pictures and put that around the entire car, starting from the door, wrapping around the back, and stopping at the other door. The marks only go down about 24" right where a thigh would constantly be rubbing on it.
It just sickens me.
Heres the scratch in the door:

ooooohhhhh my god- what are they thinking - please tell me it looked like that and you are lying! if anyone did that to my vette i would freak!
i have been in a situation like this and it very very very diff. to handle - be a complete jerk and get nada - be nice and get nada! good luck dude!
So far, everything is going fine, but nobody has had to pay anything yet. Here's how it worked. I took my car to the Corvette Service center, who I would gladly take my car to anytime (they sell and service Corvettes, but are not an actualy GM dealer). They then subcontract it out to the window tinting place which gives me a great deal, plus they (service center) openly give you a loaner car for free. Excellent, top notch service. Had I known this would happen, obviously I would have taken it elsewhere, hindsights 20/20. When I told them what had happened, they said that either they would be paying for the repair or the window tinter would. I was never brought into the equation. I seriously would hate for service center to have to pay, since they are such great people, but somebody has too. They told me that they know what these cars mean to people and that they had no reason not to believe me. They said that I probably knew my car inside and out, which is true. I guess we'll find out tomorrow when it goes in to the body shop. If I even have to reach for my wallet, theres going to be hell to pay.
When I had my MR2 turbo, I had just had it painted (custom color) and it was at Toyota for some work. I started to drive home and something was wrong. I pulled over and the car wouldn't go into gear. I called Toyota and made them have a tow truck come and get me.
Getting the car onto the flatbed, the guy scrapes my bumper. Can this get any worse? Absolutely.
When he straps the car down, he does it completely wrong. The straps aren't tight enough and when we are driving, the bumps in the road cause the car to shift and the straps crack my brand new Border bumper.

Man, what a drag. Sorry for the damage. What a bunch of maroons. I can see the damage on the rear panel, but I totally don't get the door damage. I mean, the tint is applied on the inside, right? To work on the rear window, the door would have been open. Those guys must be working in a mighty confined space to have to even come into contact with the car!
thats why i always wait with my car, and yes im that a$$hole that stays at the dealer next to my car, and when i tint it very soon i will also stay the 3hrs next to the car until they finish and if they ask me to leave i will, but ill take the car with me
I would be extremely pissed and they would have to pay for everything as it seems they are, hope it all works out and you get your car back better than before
Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear about this and yes you have every right to be pissed. Thankfully you're a reasonable man, I would have gone storming in there looking to remove someone's head from their shoulders. I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything works out for you.

Thats what I am finding that I have to do now. This is also the same reason that I change my own oil. I'm not that old (28), but my parents always instilled into me, that you should always treat things that are not yours as if they were. Who knows, maybe these guys that tint would treat a 200k car just like they would a 10k car.
I'm hoping that they only have to buff these things out. While most people would see a black car and think it would be easy to match the paint, it isn't. Trust me, theres black, and then there's BLACK!
I'll keep you all updated. Thanks for the responses. Sometimes it just helps to talk to people that love their cars as much as I do, and understand that its much more than a car.
when I got my car it was already tinted and it has the exact same scratch pattern in the exact same location on that first photo, to the left of the rear bumper seam. I have tried everything and nothing works. I have made it better with a dark polish made for dark cars. Used to see white in the scratch, now you don't, but those scratches do not buff out. Far as I'm concerned, on a black car nothing buffs out, just more marks go on.
