I just picked up my 03 Vert last week. It's fully loaded, 6 spd, medium grey with black convertible roof, polished rims etc. and had 13K km or 8,000 miles on it.
I was surpirsed at how well the C5's were retaining their value. The first 2-3 yrs are where the majority of the depreciation happens, then if well maintained, they seem to drop about $3k/yr or less.
I got the car for about $30K less than when it was new and everything in Ontario was at the same price, low to mid $50K's I was expecting to pay mid to high $40K's.... Oh well I'm happy now!!!
Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, I LOVE MY C-5
I'm sorry guys - but this picture IS worth a thousand words - the C5 simply looks DATED compared to the C6 ... and it seems like some C6 bashing here ... these are all VETTES, remember? The C6 looks cheaper than the C5 - come on ...
I think the C5's will be hold their resale value a lot better than most people thought. Remember when the dealers were discounting the 04's heavily and all the buzz was about the C6 ? Those days are over, and the C5 has stabilzed considerably. I bought my 98 in Nov. of 04, the seller just got a new C6 and he gave me an excellent deal on the 98 like it was yesterdays news. I'm confident that I could sell the 98 for more than what I paid for it. Now that doesn't happen every day !!!!
I think the price of the 6 is helping hold the value of the 5.
But OMG - the C6 sure looks good to me. From any and every angle too. Could only imagine how it would look from the drivers seat with my tags on it. Conversely, my liquid assets would be done for after pulling that trigger.
Consumer reports gave the C6 a better rating than the C5. Cheap looking? I guess you think Italian exotics look cheap too?
Looking at the picture posted of the C5 and C6 next to each other . . . my first thought was what is that Camaro doing parking next to the Vette. I don't know what Consumer reports you read, but the annual edition I bought last night didn't have it that way at all. The C5's were rated better in just about every category, for most years.
Don't hold your breath. The C4's also held their values very well for a few years. The early consensus was that the C5s had a big rear end, were no faster than the LT4 and weren't even close to the retired ZR1 (all true).
We eventually warmed up to them (over 1/4 million of made), Chevrolet released the Z06 and the C4 prices dropped steadily for years.
Actually I have noticed that C4s and C5s seem to be holding their value very well. Maybe its because so many people are seeing the light of the Corvette world. The C6 is a beautiful car as well and I think that it has brought alot of 1st time buyers who are starting to realize the value and fun of owning a Corvette. I never have a problem driving to work. Now once I get there it's a different story but driving there is great!!!

Bad pic of the C5 but to me it still looks 100% better than smiley faced Nissan.
I figure in 6-7 years it will be worth 50% of it's value today.

Well looks are subjective. I prefer the C6 styling, and there's no doubt it's a superior car, however most will take the slightly used C5 and $10k-$20k in the bank. If money were absolutely no object I would bet that lots more would take the C6.

I was at a Chinese restaurant last night here in Germany and there was a nice looking red sports car in the parking lot... I had to walk over and look at her butt to realize it was a Corvette. Maybe it was viewing it from the side but I don't have that problem with any other generation -I have Vette-radar! If I'd seen it driving towards be with the bright DRLs, I'm sure I'd have recognized it...
I'm not trying to dog the C6. It's a great looking car. Just an observation from someone that doesn't see them very often.
LOL, you C5 owners crack me up. You're the same guys that give me the stare ahead and don't wave when I pass you. Get a grip.
I would like the C6, if GM had not put the rear brake light on the top of the trunk surrounded by black plastic like an afterthought; had not just put the rear license plate on the back like it was a dealer magnet mount; had not put more black plastic on the rear bottom; had put decent chrome wheels on, that were not apt to pit in 6 months and have a cheap looking chrome job (should have put forged wheels on for the new pricing); had not cheapened the engine compartment with even cheaper looking plastic than the C5; had not cheapened the dash and center column (even cheaper looking than the C5 which is amazing); if GM had painted the targa top properly; had not raised the roof line; if the C6 didn't have brake problems; if they put a key hole on the driver door; and a miriad of other new model shake-out issues that I've read posts about; and, if it didn't look so much like an 80's Camaro from the front!
