That happened to me recently, and it was the battery (2000 vert) . Changed to a "red top" and all is well!
If you read the whole thread you will see he did put in a new battery but his problem persisted. Now the dealer is trying to rip him off by not telling him about the column lock recall.

Ahhhh...that makes even more sense why they are trying to rip you off. Give them hell!!!
I had this same message pop up on my DIC and I have the CLB. I couldn't figure out WTH either. Well, I started snooping around and to my surprise found out my CLB wasn't even plugged in. I had taken the car to get a steering wheel sensor replaced and apparently the mechanic, being used to just plugging in the stock harness, did just that and left the CLB out of the circuit. So I had been driving around for about 8 mos. with no functioning CLB and didn't know it. I would've really been surprised if the column had actually locked up on me knowing that I had the CLB.

The saga continues.... the service center is now telling me that it is "AFTER-MARKET starter relay".....What a joke...I have talked to the Dealerships manager who promised to call me back with a discounted rate for the labor it took them to come to this conclusion....I just want to choke the @*$! outta someone in service right now......After-market starter...the only A/M part in my car is the CLB Kit.....

You know what? There is a possibilty they are right. I have heard of some people having problems with the CLB in the 99's. Certain models were not compatible with the CLB...let us know what happens.
I've had that happen occasionally over the past year but not on a regular basis. It's been totally random. I was told by some club members that sometimes when you hop in the car and turn on the ignition you might do it in a way that the security system may think the car is being started illegally so it shuts you down and the message comes up. It figures that if you are the real driver with the real key then after 10 seconds you should be able to insert the key again and start it without a problem. That's what's always happened when it occurs with me. Most often it happens when I get into the car when it's in the garage and put it in reverse.
... ive never had ANY problems with the column locking and leaving me stranded ..
after i did the last recall, where they remove the parts, I have seen pull key wait 10 seconds more time sthan i can count .. my car wont start until after anywhere from 2 - 10 trys .. or by holding the key down for 30 seconds ..
it's beginning to get annoying ..
i thought it was voltage related but i got my voltage back up to 14.2 volts .. .. maybe i should start asking questions because im at the end of my rope ..

heres the last the chapter in this saga, cross your fingers for me! After the manager never called back i had my husband call & tell them I felt they were ripping me off.....blah blah blah, they told him the same thing they would get back to him, about 20 mins later they call me all sweet and like nothing happened and tell me the service will be comp'd but my fob needs training can they do that for me .... i have gone through many batterys and one thing i can do on my own is fob training.....what so they can charge me 75.00 for my key fob ....what schisters i tell ya.....anyway my baby is safe and sound back at home....i need to start driving it more, i only have 33k on it.......Thanks to all who helped and good luck to those who have similar problems. you are not alone......Happy Trails....
Wow great information...I bought my 1999 new and had the first recall done...but did not know or have recieved any info on this second one.
Dealer's can be sly....If you get a good one your lucky....usually if your a member of a corvette club and you all go to the same dealer...this will eliminate a problem like ripoffs.
My 01 coupe has done it a couple of times after CLB install, read all replys and visited my mechanic who is ver very good and works for GM Garage and is exclusive to vettes he says there are a bunch of defective kits out there. Mine will be replaced next week.
I just had my 2000 Coupe with 28,000 miles in to the local chevy dealer to resolve the Column Lock Recall. I had a list of things for them to do as well like check my battery since it was original. Also both my FOB's were not working correctly and thought the batteries must need changing. Dealer stated the battery is A OK, stated they needed to order new transmitters. Not sure why! And yes they did the COlumn Lock Recall. That night when i picked up the car, I experienced the messge on my DIC --- Pull key & wait 10 seconds. I did what it asked and thought nothing of it. Last weekend I experienced it again and the car shut off. It's been raining alot here in CT and I have not been driving. Came across this thread and now I'm very concerned. What is causing this on my car? I only have begun to experience this since the column lock recall was done. That work was done last Friday, May 5th, 2006. I bought my car in Feb 26, 2000. I'm very surprised that so many of you have experienced the same thing. I think I will be calling back the dealer tomorrow.
Sounds like they reprogrammed your computer to cut fuel if it detects a problem with the column lock (that was part of the 2004 recall procedure). Did they remove your locking plate completely (can you turn your steering wheel with your ignition off and key out)? I believe the new recall (Feb 2006) they are only suppose to remove the locking plate and change the harness.
I'm not sure! I need to call and talk with the dealership. I need to schedule some time to revisit this issue!
You don't need to go to the dealer to know whether ot not you can turn your steering wheel with the ignition off and key out. If you can, then either the plate has been removed or you have a bypass installed.
