Actually - the LEO sounded pretty cool to me. It could have been much worse. I think it's a good thing that you kept your head and didn't mouth off to him, it could have gotten ugly.
I am frequently told by my boss and my wife - it's the perception and not the actual act that gets you in trouble.
But he's just as likely to say "Thanks for the confession" and write you a ticket.
That question is like "Have you stopped beating your wife?" There's no way to win.
If you admit to why he pulled you over, you're admitting guilt. If you say "no", then you were driving without care and attention.
Most tutorials and books on the subject indicate that you should say nothing, or simply say "yes" or "no" without elaboration.
You're absolutely right. Thats why when he was asking questions, i simply responded with Yes, sir or No, Sir, and didn't go into detail until he asked for it.
I must confess... when i saw his lights... the first thought that crossed my mind was: "Hmm.... i wonder how well that Crown Vic would keep up if i floored it... " lol - then i pulled over...

Yeah but that Crown Vic's radio can do 670,616,629 miles an hour.....

Less of a "Could i outrun the police" question and more of a "I wonder how well that Crown Vic performs with the Police Modifications..." thought...
I've seen a couple police around where i live pulling outa the station and STEPPING on it for no apparent reason... they sound pretty good, and get up 'n go pretty quick too... They gotta be car enthusiasts, how can you be a traffic cop and not like cars?

I have two NJ highway patrol state troupers friends.. they both have C5's.... They are very speed conscious. They know they risk their life anytime they have to exceed speed limits.. For them it is part of the there job to put their life at risk to possible save the life of someone else... everytime they exceed the limit they know they are pushing their luck... High speed chases are not fun...these guys are mature have wives and children, when forced to chase some wood be road racer, they risk their families future.. Those who think it is fun are just foolish...Cops know first hand what a traffic fatality look like,,, no one is immune.. men , women little children etc, and its there job to clean up the mess... Keeping the roads safe is not as glamorous as it looks...It's dangerous work... If you are stopped for unsafe driving, its at the police offerer's risk.. when he come up to your car, he doesn't know who is sitting behind the wheel.. His job is to keep you and me safe...

Hmm... why do i feel like i'm being lectured here... Thanks for clearing that up for me ET, i had no idea police knew the risks of their jobs... :
ET, you did however indirectly answer my question about some police being car enthusiasts! Your two friends have Corvettes, so they must be!
And besides, can you tell me your LEO friends don't enjoy their squad cars? They don't have confidence in the cars handling, as well as feel their cars are fast? I'm sure they've even compared their Squad Cars to their Corvettes and weighed the differences. (C5s coming out on top of course... )
At any rate, I was just mentioning a thought on comparing car performance not being a 'foolish would be road racer' running from the cops.
My Ex-GF's grandma bought a retired squad car, and that thing was pretty ballsy... but really sucked on Gas Mileage... lol

You did the right thing when you were respectful and honest with the LEO. That was probably what saved you from a ticket. Your thought about how well that Crown Vic would keep up should really have been "that guy already has my tag number before he hit the lights"

i just turned 23 but last year i had the same problem. on x-mas eve me and my cousin were going home and because we were at the light together and my 99 6-speed left the line quicker than his mercury the cop followed us home and gave us tickets. he was a real jerk. it probably didnt help that when he came back with my info i was playing need for speed on my gamecube but we had our day in court and me and my cousin won. he tried to say that my tires were sqealing also. guess he didnt know that runflats dont make noise. if your not breaking the speed limit or driving wrecklessly the cops need to back off.

You instigate it, (or so you SAY) then you're upset you get a ticket?

That is what you call, "justifying a Lawyers Salary" Any lawyer will tell you to say nothing. But the lawyer is not the one facing jail or a fine, in fact he/she wants your money to defend you in court when there is a good possibility you may not even be charged if you were honest to start with. We are not talking about a felony charge, just a traffic ticket, and the officer is the only one(in most cases) who decides if a ticket is issued or not. Besides, no matter what you say, unless you spend alot of money on an attorney, you will be found guilty, if in fact your are guilty! (in most cases)
Best advice is to just use a "level head" when and if you get pulled over. An officer usually has his intentions already made before he or she walks up to your car, but a bad or argumentative attitude can make things worse. Just be courteous and usually things will work out to your advantage.
Years ago I was a passenger in my friends car returning from PA. I believe we were on RT.78 and got pulled over.
Officer.....know why I pulled you over?
Friend......no sir
Officer.....you have a tail light out and you were speeding.
Friend......I wasn't speeding.
At this time the officer looks over to me and asks,"was he speeding?" I replied, "yeah, he was speeding" My friend's jaw dropped. He couldn't believe what i just said. The officer took my friend's information back to his cruiser.....came back in a few minutes, handed everything back to my friend and said, "get that tail light fixed and slow down"
Wow thats great thanks! I'm sure the law is something similar here in WA State, based on what the officer mentioned about arresting for street racing...
Yep, we've had that in TX since last September. It's all Officers discretion too which really puts a hurt lock you if the officer has had a bad night or just doesn't like you.
I had the same happen to me about 15 years ago. Bunch of kids going out to race and passed me on the hwy. I got pulled over too for racing and I was even with them, speeding, trying to race, revving my engine or anything but I was in a 70 nova primer grey with a hot engine so I got to visit the judge.... I was so pissed off I didn't even go talk to him and just tossed down the 300 bones it took to pay it. Later on I was talking to the Judge and he said I should have come talked to him, he would have dropped it. Dumb me.....
