where im from it doesnt matter what you do for a living if you have a nice car and your young the police will harrass you. we already had the tickets when i was on the gamecube. he was trying to see if he could arrest us. but like i said i had my day in court and he ended up in more trouble than i did. i wasnt complaining that i got a ticket i was adding to the original statement that police sometimes do get the wrong impression about sports cars and jump to conclusions.

Who wants to volunteer to go to court?

Not that I'd want to be in that situation in the first place, mind you.

Default Good job!!

I have a 22 year old daughter who drives a tricked out Honda Civic and the last two times she was pulled over the same question was asked ...
Do you know why I pulled you over?

1st response: Because I'm cute? Result: no ticket

2nd response: Oh sure now you want me to do your job too!?
result: $125.00 fine for 5mph over

You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders glad you got a break.
I had her read all of the responses here and hope she will learn to curb the attitude.

I second the Jerk idea...
...it is amazing that the cops in central florida will "instigate" a street race and if anyone responds they arrest or ticket for streeet reacing...
...its stupid.

you may quote me...
...jerk cops are everywhere and this is not said in response to any treatment I have been handed by the police..
...many are just interested in ticketing viloations...
but today they seem to think they have an obligation to ticket or react to anticipated infractions...

That is a JERK response from a police officer...

...to the cops on CF who are listening...
I have friends who are cops and I minister to some of them...

Default Just IMHO.........

26 years doing the job described here by some others.......the BEST thing to do if stopped is to be honest, pleasant, conversational....and oh, did I mention honest? It is those who don't know, or profess not to know what they did who need the education of getting the ticket. It is called officer DISCRETION....and we use it all the time.
Most law enforcement officers are taught to make up their minds about whether to write the ticket before they ever walk up to the car.............and I have said "I'm not going to let your crummy attitude talk me into giving you the ticket you deserve........."
Think about whether you would like to have your Mom, sister, wife, children.......driving around in your city if there were NO traffic enforcement..........it would look like a demolition derby.......

Think for a moment if you would like the cook in your favorite restaurant to cook your meal if you treated him the way you treated the last law enforcement officer who stopped you...........would you eat that meal ---- did you deserve the ticket?????
Thanks for listening..............

Last time I got pulled over the officer said "Do you know how fast you were going?" I took the honest approach and said "about 60." It was a highway with no other cars on it and a speed limit of 50. He said, "That's right, here's your ticket."

In the future, I'll say nothing.

I find it hard to believe that traffic enforcement is what keeps the majority of drivers from simply running each other off the road.

Default Oh come on.........

OK......you are the one responsible driver in Tigard, OR.....but for everyone else,
people do things while driving their cars that they would not do to other shoppers in the grocery store with their shopping carts. Can you see what the grocery store would be like if people cut each other off, flipped each other off, honked at each other, tailgated, ran as fast as they could through the store, raced each other to the checkout lane, crashed carts into each other..........Do you really believe that human nature would be that kind to each other on our roads if everyone KNEW that regardless of what they did, they would never get a ticket or be held accountable for their actions?????????
Let the ing begin................geez folks, most of you admit you were doing something that could have gotten you a ticket, whether you got one or not....10 over is still 10 over..........

Goes to show that honesty isn't necessarily going to get you off with just a warning, so being honest doesn't always pay off. I agree with you Craig, best thing to do is to say nothing.

You're also right that traffic enforcement is not what keeps most of us from violating the traffic laws. I prefer to think that it's survival, preservation of our lives and our property. I don't run stop lights because I think I might get a ticket for doing so, I don't do it because I don't want to get killed or kill someone else by doing it.

Don't even compare driving to pushing around a shopping cart in the grocery store Pewter Dream. That is a ridiculous analogy. Have you ever seen shopping cart police? I honestly have to say I haven't, but I also haven't seen people acting the way you described in my local grocery stores. Ridiculous analogy, huh?

Default getting stupid !!!

You have had a couple of men that were on the job for years tell you what they think and how they perform thier jobs. I would think you would take it at face value from someone that lived it, rather than from someone at sometime in thier life was a wannbe.

Your analogy is flawed, because I do see those things going on (metaphorically speaking) in the grocery store. How many times have you been pushing a cart down an aisle on the right-hand side and someone coming the other way just darts to your side and stops, facing you? I see it all the time. People wandering down the aisle from side-to-side. And I often ask myself, "Would they do that while driving their car?"

I will admit though, you analogy did make me reconsider whether the roads would become a demolition derby without traffic enforcement. I stand by my original statement.

The big difference is, as someone pointed out, that there is an element of risk to life and property to doing that while driving that does not exist in the grocery store.

I'm not advocating that there should not be any enforcement. Getting drunks off the road, stopping street racing, and so on, are necessary activities.

Default Hey there!!!

...........Was that an analogy or a simile ---- perhaps it was even a metaphore......and not ridiculous at all.....People are more courteous to each other when the mask of anonymity given us in our vehicles is taken away. You are not anonymous at the store, because you have to immediately face the person you would make angry...maybe even run into them again in the next isle...........Have any of you heard of road rage? It only happens because of the anonymity granted us behind the wheel of our cars..........
Man! This forum has always been so reasonable and professional in their responses to these kinds of things...........not to put too fine a point on this, but this is starting to sound like a ricer forum.......think I'll go back and read the first two pages of this string again......

That’s kinda how I feel, I’m a little surprised that Police Departments are cracking down so hard on drivers about the street racing thing. I'm almost nervous to accel quickly with a car in the lane next to me, for fear it might appear I’m racing... how ridiculous is that?

When the officer asked me why he pulled me over, I said no. I didn't really know, honestly. So now he's going to assume I’m lying, or I’m too ignorant to actually know I broke the law. In either case I deserve a ticket according to you. (Point being: there are exceptions... don't assume you know the actual circumstances)

In reality, the officer pulled me over because he assumed I was in a Race with the other car, and/or was trying to instigate a race with the other car. Since I wasn't really doing either of those, I didn't really break any laws, thus didn't really need to be pulled over. I'm glad that officer was as clear headed as every officer should be, and could see the truth in this particular circumstance.

Again, you people who are complaining about being pulled over are guilty of some infraction by your own admission. I agree that there are a few bad pickles in every barrel, but that doesn't mean that every cop has the intention of writing a ticket to everyone they pull over. Your attitude plays a big roll to persuade his discretion. Some cops will write their own mothers a ticket but they are far and few between. Some have a fixation to write as many tickets as possible in a shift. It makes them look better to their supervisors because they are generating #'s at the end of the day. Believe me, there aren't that many of them. Use your head and don't be a smart A$$.

It was an analogy and it was ridiculous PD.

As far as the issue of anonymity goes, that's hardly the case even when we're driving our cars. I can usually see the other driver, unless he's got limo tint on his side window, which I think is illegal in most if not all states. I am not discourteous to other drivers because I think I've got some sort of anonymity going (not saying I'm discourteous in the first place, in fact I try being courteous to others on the road). Road rage does NOT happen because we may or may not be anonymous. Road rage is almost exclusively the result of someone else's actions on the road.

I don't agree with the philosophy of reving an engine constituting a street race because if that is true then why don't we see all the Harley riders pulled over at every intersection? Seems a little one sided just like the click it or ticket campaign but driving without a helmet or insurance is ok.
I think we need some new legislation to control more stuff we like to do.
Maybe eating and breathing will be next.
