i cant speak for the kit, but i tried the DIY with lowes parts.
the holes for the lights are recessed and get smaller as they go in, when you bring the light forward to make them flush, it creates a gap around the light. what fills your gap??

There are two pieces of weather strip that go at the bottom of the light... you stick them to the facia and then install the lights. One piece is like standard flat foam and the other has a rolled edge. Sorry I have no pics of the parts.

i can see what your saying. really depends on what weather stripping you use i guess, the stuff recommended on the DIY site sucks big time. looks real cheap.
i do however really like the look, i probably should have just purchased the kit!
