My 99' intermittingly will not start. About once an outing when I go to start it theres nothing there. Not a click or anything. I keep tturning the key for usually about 4-5 min. then it will always start. What the heck? Its not always when it is hot. when I go out in the morning it sometimes does it. My key controller I think needs a new battery because it seems like Im always having to press the 2 buttons to re-program the controller.
Are you on your original battery? thats where I'd start.
Also, you don't mention if this is an A4 or MN6. If MN6 check the switch in the clutch peddle, make sure it is adjusted/working.
May also check the wires on the starter. I had a nut come off the positive lead once and it was hanging on by a thread. It displayed simular symptoms
Good luck
If your condition when you turn the key is that all the other dash lights come back on and there's no sound from the starter, then the starter circuit is open. If it was the battery or battery connection, you'd either here the starter clicking or all the lights/power would go completely off.
Assuming the issue is with the starter circuit, check the following:
- MN6 - check the clutch switch behind the clutch pedal (enables starter).
- A4 - Check the transmission shift switch - I believe this in the console area near the shifter. It allows the car to only start in P or N. Try starting it in N instead of P to see if there's a problem detecting the P position.
- Both - check the ignition cylinder - it has a switch at the end of it that enables the starting circuit. Either the switch in the cylinder is bad or the electrical connector is the problem.
