I want to keep track of everything that I do to my car (maintenance and mods) and would prefer it to be done on a PC (web based or an application). Does anyone else do this and have any recommendations?
I registered with mygmlink.com. It's a nuisance going on line to access it, but at least it won't get lost among my papers. Speaking of papers, I save all my maintenance and repair/replacements receipts.
I started with a spreadsheet, but since I work for a major software corporation which produces asset management software, and I have a copy on my laptop, I use it. Gives me PM, CM, Mod activities, I can track costs, trend analysis for $/longevity, meters for mileage based PM, engine cycles for other maintenance. Its a thing of beauty.
I use C.A.R.
Chris Auto Recorder...(I think thats the real name ...)
Been using it for 20 (twenty years)..so ya know its an
old DOS program...and it was either freeware or Shareware...
I have owned some of my Corvettes for all of those 20 years and honestly did NOT want to loose any "old" info by finding a New "Winders" program...
I have 2 Garages with an old 286 and old 386 computers in them...BIG Plus is that I can turn on a DOS computer enter the Gasoline etc I just put in a car and save the info & back it up to a floppy BEFORE a DAMN Windows program would even "come up"...
The program does work on Xp Computers just have to do it in DOS mode...
I will admit however that I DO NOT KEEP TRACK OF COSTS...other then normal costs for repair, insurance, gas, oil, and regular parts.. I would be sick If I kept
track of the cost of mods, or restorations...
I use a modified program from microsoft works. It has a program for cars and then I modified it into a excel program. I keep track of everything I do to a car, milage and cost, all but gas. It comes in handy when your ready to sell, you can see what the car cost you. The bad part of this it shows how much you have spent on mods. So far on every car I have spent way more than I would have guessed if I didnt have the log. I also log when and where the parts came from in case I ever have a problem.
Thanks for the feedback. I guess I will use a custom spreadsheet for a short term solution but might eventually write something web based. I was kind of suprised that googling did not seem to find a lot of software that does this.

They will even give you Email notices of when you should do maintenance based on mileage rate. They give you recalls and a free electronic copy of the owners manual (great for looking up specific references using search feature).
I use My Yahoo, which you can add an Auto Maintenance Schedule window. It tracks your oil changes and routine maintenance. I will also send email for a reminder of maintenance due. Only problem is it is web based, and subject to Yahoo’s quirks. I keep track of all mods and costs, and notes in Excel.
I tried AutoWolf software, but didn’t care for it enough to purchase. http://www.lonewolf-software.com/automotivewolf.htm
Google now has a limited test for their web based spreadsheet. You can even save it as an excel file. I will definitely be checking this out over the next few days.
If there is enough interest I would write a program for this. I am a programmer and could write some neat stuff for you guys. PM me if you are interested.
