Related question... what would be acceptable speed ranges for gearing in an automatic? In otherwords, if I start out in 1st how fast should I go before I manually shift to 2nd? Same thing for 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th?

People have said that you can cruise on the highway in 3rd gear as fast as 70's mph. ???

2.73 gears
RPM 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
6000 59 111 181 259

3.15 gears
RPM 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
6000 51 96 157 225

When I had 2.73 gears, I would shift 1st to 2nd at 50mph and 2nd to 3rd at 106. Had it up to 162 in 3rd gear...

I almost never used 4th gear (OD)

With my current 3.90 gears, I shift much higher (redline is 7000rpm), so my shift patterns look like this

3.90 gears
RPM 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
6700 46 87 142 203

my 98 c5 is actually so fast with needing new tires that it starts to spin and shuts off acceleration - turn off traction and see what happens

The best way to drive an A4 is to put it in drive, and then drive forward to the dealership or individual who is selling an MN6 and buy that one instead.

"Automatic mode" is when you let the transmission change gears for you - up and down.

The little bus is pulling up

I think it is in "Automatic mode"

(jk'g of course )

Have the shift points adjusted. It will make a difference you can feel. Also, change out the gears. These to things will have you shopping for new tires in no time.

I drive around town in 3rd. When on the freeway, I shift to D for the overdrive economy mode. Have been up to 70+ MPH in 3rd without any adverse effects. BTW after putting in Royal Purple tranny fluid and rear end gear oil the shifting is much smoother. IMO

dont shift the car it will just make you slower, keep it in 3rd and for economy put it in fourth. 3rd is really drive in these cars and d is overdrive for those that dont know. 1 and 2 is mainly for hills and such. Go to the track and try shifting the auto manual vs. just leaving it in 3rd, you will almost every time be slower, you cant outshift a computer.

Same set up and I had the shifts points changed through an LS1 edit but I use the shifter to shift up and down when having "fun" otherwise she gets left in "D"
