i know it's a stupid question but is there a trick to get this thing to be driven better? i feel that there is a way to accomplish this and i know for a fact there are better auto drivers than others, its how and when you kick it down or shift etc....
my scenario today is i was coming off a ramp, my car slowed down to about 40mph then i floored it and it shifted into first and takes off like a bullet but when it shifted to second gear its like the car picked up an anchor behind it or something....wtf....how do you deal with this, was i suppose to manually shift it into first and then second or am in bad need of a better torque converter maybe?, please help.....i know these autos are capable of much more than my car is offering.

The car most likely shifted into 3rd when you nailed it and back into overdrive - thus the anchored feeling. Try driving it with the gear selector in 3rd or get a tune to modify the shift event (ie... shift point and firmness).
I slap some 3.73's in there and throw in a nice torque conveter (3200-3600) while I'm at it, place the shifter into 3rd and tell my passanger to buckle up and hang on tight.
3.42's and a 3200-3600 stall and you will never have that problem. as a matter of fact, you will want to change the shift points so it wont downshift to 1st in a situation like the because it will most likely kick on the active handeling.
my car seems to pull hardest in 2nd and 3rd gear from a 20-30 mph roll.

No anchor, that was your wife hanging onto your nutz. Tell your wife to let go of your nutz and get a real tranny that does what you want it to, when you want it to.

Get a good dyno tune and have the tuner work over the shift points..... Then again, it helps that the I have stock 3:15's
I had mine tuned before headers/CAI/exhaust and it drove like a totally different car and now after the mods, if you went for a ride hold on to your nutz....
Wait a minute...... Your wife is already doing that

1> Get a good stall, it will give you shift extensions.
2> Manually shift, do not "kick down"
3> If you have to use the auto functions, do so in 3rd - Not OD.
4> Gears are a beautiful thing on a auto
ok someone said that i have active handling....!!!!!!
i didn't know 97's had active handling...do i?
thanks guys for your inputs anyways, but i'm not changing gears for now, a converter for sure, maybe ill buy this hypertech programmer and reprogram everything.

What do you mean by "kick down" and "If you have to use the auto functions"? BTW, is my vast mechanical knowledge showing through?

You currently shift to lower gears by depressing the gas pedal, correct? That is "kicking down" to a lower gear. I prefer to pull the shifter handle manually into the gear I want - it's much faster and gives you more control.
"Automatic mode" is when you let the transmission change gears for you - up and down.

with 3.42 gears and 2800 TC - I feel like traction has become a serious issue...
If i nail it, the tires will just spin and when she is about to shift into 2nd, my heart skips a beat, not knowing how badly the car wil chirp into 2nd
ummm, first i use the key fob to open the door, then i get in & sit down. next i use the key to start the car put it in D & off i go. that was your question wasn't it? bub
