So, I bought a supposedly 'universal' shift ****, pulled my demon key, and the 'universal' **** doesn't fit. Not a terrible thing, since it was cheap, but can anyone tell me what I should be looking for when buying a new one to make sure the thing will fit? And if I later switch out to a Ripper, is it still going to fit?
The oem shifter is 9/16-18 thread. Some of the aftermarket shifters have that same thread size as well. The universal ***** I've seen usually come with plastic inserts to adapt to various applications, but 9/16" is large by typical standard metric or 3/8" SAE sizes used on other shifters (non Corvette).
Unfortunately, many aftermarket ***** contain injection-molded "adapters" so that they can sell one package top owners of any type of car. I've seen them and was not impressed. This is why I designed my own a few years ago. I bought a 9/16-18 tap and ran it a full 1.5 inches deep. Thus far, I have never had one strip and believe me, I tighten the bejeezes out of it. Of course, I also have Loctite 425, just in case......
Fair enough, I should be able to find a tap. Is there a technique to getting the thing dialed in so it faces the right way, or is it a case of just taking a couple shots at it?
Still wondering if it is going to fit if I switch to a B&M ripper later. Anyone know if the threads are the same?
I have the B&M 45044 and the thread size is 9/16-18, so stock **** will fit until your search for a new **** ends. I would question the thread size before you buy and would not buy a universal fit. My .02.

I use various thickness washers as shims till the **** tightens at the proper orientation.

if you get a B&M make sure you ge the enew version that fits C5's and C6's, stock shifter **** fits and no noise at all

For my shift *****, a mirror-polished aluminum locking collar is used as a "jam nut" to prevent the **** from rotating. Some metal ***** incorporate set screws to lock in the correct orientation.
