Default column lock clarification

So this past weekend, my column locked up on my 2000 FRC (6-speed). I know that the column lock topic has been discussed over and over again. I was able to unlock by disconnecting my battery (which is new) and reconnecting it. I have ordered a CLB from Corvettes of Houston and am eagerly awaiting its arrival.

I called the local dealership and Chevrolet Corporate to figure out which recall has been performed on my car. They said that in Aug 2004, recall #04006 was performed but they could not give me any specifics. They want me to bring the car in so they can run a diagnostic to see if my car is covered under Special Policy #05081. I want to avoid this altogether. My question to the wisemen of CF is...will the CLB work with #04006 (2004) performed on my car? I heard that if #04006C was done then you would have to remove the faulty K harness for the CLB to work. Thanks in advance.... and let me throw in one of these

I had campaign 4006 performed on my car in October 2004. I had already installed a CLB on the car prior to the recall, and once they finished the work, I reinstalled the CLB. The CLB has worked just fine even with the recall performed, at least on my car.

Or send it to me. I'd really like to do some failure analysis on some of these K Harnesses.

Did my column lock bypass after dinner tonite. Took me about 45 minutes or so-I am not a brain surgeon. Hardest part was getting the knee pad back on and lined up correctly. Didn't throw any codes and nothing on the DIC. Seems to be great. As an added bonus, my telescoping steering wheel wasn't working and found that it was bound up on the trim so I fixed that too. You'lll feel better once its in

I have had mine in the storage compartment, i.e. not installed, for about a year just in case it ever locks up. I need to install it. Any tips?

well first thing is to install it. Once it locks up you are going to have to take it to the dealer first to get it unlocked. You need to install the bypass before the lockup occurs.
There is a good thread on the forum with step by step instructions which must be a pamplet that should be called "CLB installation for Dummies" which would be me.
I got mine from corvettes of houston and the cigarette lighter harness came already setup to plug into the CLB harness which was a nice feature.
The biggest pain is getting the trim pieces back on and lined up. You could do this in 30 minutes easy and I don't think there is any special technique

I thought the cigarette lighter plug-in was to unlock the column when it locked up. I figured I could take the lower dash apart and unlock the column and install the CLB if it locked up. No?

The cig-lighter plug is used during the CLB install to energize the lock to the UNLOCK position before disconnecting the harness. If your column lock is stuck in the locked position, then in most cases you're SOL and will need to take it to the dealer to unlock before installing the CLB. Unless of course you're lucky enough to get it unstuck.

Why risk the hassle. Install the CLB Today!

It never ceases to amaze me; the misconceptions about the CLB.
When I first bought my Corvette, that was the first thing that I did.
BUT, I live my life learning from OTHER people's mistakes.

#1 order one
#2 install it (not difficult)
#3 never worry about getting stranded

Does my car have the K Harness from the recall in 2004? I thought that they installed those earlier this year with a different recall (04006C). I was hoping to avoid this altogether, cause COH said that their CLB will not work if the K Harness has been installed. I am assuming that it is easy to remove. If I have one, I can send it to you.

If that was the case everyone would just carry around the cigarette lighter plug in and not bother to install the CLB. Many people have the same misconception as you and find out too late that they were misinformed.

BTW here is a link to help with your install...

Buy it. Install it. Forget it.

I just don't understand why anyone would rather risk getting stuck, having to flat bed their car to a stealership, blah, blah, blah - rather than buy a stupid little $50 part that takes 15 minutes to install.

I just ordered a CLB from Corvettes of Houston. How do I recognize the K-Harness and remove it?

Default Sheet...

Wow this could be an issue for me then as I'm picking up a 99 A4 this weekend ( to sit with my 65 coupe) and driving it back 700 miles to its new home in NY.. My obvious issue is I gotta shut it off some time to pee... I'm gonna bring some pliers just in case I need to disconnect the battery if it happens. From what I can see he did have the recall done, but that doesn't matter from what I've seen/read.. Gonna be saying some prayers on the way home..

Nope. Just saying that the CLB is such a non-issue.

Everyone that is affected by it should just treat it like putting gas in their cars. It has to be done - so just do it.

Mine was done on my 2002Z in March, 2005. I installed a CLB from COH in May of this year. No problems. Do it!
