Default "Computer Aided Gear Selection", 1-4 shift

I was reading about the C4 ZR-1s and the that forced a 1-4 gear shift at light throttle openings.

I also read that the C5 6-speeds have this also, true? Does it make you shift from 1st to fourth or can you go through 1-2-3-4?

Thank you,

Joel B.

Yes it does, but a skip shift eliminator can be installed.

Yes- The C5 also has this...if you are below (I want to say 2000 RPM) it will force you to go to 4th from 1st- There is a simple $20 inline harness you can buy to defeat this. Most of us 6 speeders have this installed as the CAGS is a PITA. Keep in mind, even with the CAGS defeat installed, the 1st to 4th light on the gauge cluster still comes on...but you can use any gear as you wish...

C5's have it, it is based on several factors -
1)How much percentage of throttle is engaged
2)What the current speed is
And I think one other but can't recall it.

3) The car needs to be warmed up.

According to the owners manual

This light will come on when:
- The engine coolant temperature is higher than 120°F
- You are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
- You are at 21 percent throttle or less.

, or you can be cheap like me and install a $1 resistor from radio shack, works great and no more annoying 1-4 shifts!

Get the eliminator. Well worth the effort.

So...does the CAGS physically prevent the shifter from shifting into 2nd or 3rd?

i am a bone-stock corvette guy but i can assure all that if our next vette is an m6, i'll have that cags eliminator put on the car within 24 hours of purchase. i've driven all sorts of manual transmission cars & jeeps for years; if i have & drive a manual, ain't no stinking computer gonna tell me what gear i need to be in. bub

It's a pretty goofy feeling too since it's really obvious that it's guiding you into 4th (and always against your better judgment or wishes too). You learn to drive around it within 2 times of hitting it, but I'm still going to install the bypass.

If you drive it like you stole it, it's not even an issue

Yep, if you're driving your Vette the way you're supposed to drive it, the 1-4 shift isn't an issue!

If you are within the parameters mentioned above, yes it will make it extremely difficult to go from first to second. You could force it into second, but may cause some damage. Buy the eliminator, or do the radio shack suggestion. Or, some will say just rev it high enough and this will never be an issue, however, there are plenty of low speed applications where the eliminator comes in handy.

I had the skip-shift feature programmed out during my tune after a cam/header install. No more skip shift light either.

Under certain condition, it will make you shift from 1st to 4th. However, installing a skip shift eliminator (CAGS eliminator) will allow you to shift through all gears at your pleasure.

The eliminator harness is the best $19 mod you can every buy. Had one installed the first week I owned my ride. I bought a manual shift for a reason....I like to decide when to shift into second & fourth and not have the computer decide for me. Very easy to install if you have access to a lift. Took all of 30sec to do.
