I see so many threads about column lock problems. I would like to hear from people who haven't. I have never had a problem with my car (2002 Mn6), I know, I know. What percentage of the C5s do you think have had this problem 10%, 50%, 75%? I know a locked column is a terrible problem and can ruin a days work, a vacation etc. The fact that GM finally threw in the towel and admitted defeat on this engineering Titanic says a lot, (and they still can't fix it). I suppose we will never know how many or what percentage. So to those of you who have had it happen my sincere sympathy. And to the rest of us, however many that may be GOOD LUCK!

I'm on my second C5 (2000 & 2002). Neither one has ever had the column lock problem.
When you post on this thread you should state year of car and transmission. After 2000 models I believe only the MN6's had the column lock.
I have an '02 MN6 and have not had a problem because I put a CLB on it a few weeks after I got it two years ago. Also I have never had the recalls done on it.
I haven't really put a pencil to it but I believe only about 60% of all C-5's built came with the locking column. The way to figure this number accurately would be to find out when they stopped putting them on the A-4's and check the production numbers up until then. During the last half of C-5 production only about 20% of production was MN-6's.
I'm sure there is someone on here with nothing more to do than figure out the exact percentage equipped with the dreaded column lock.
The 98 had no problem for 3 years, took it to the dealer for some preventive maintenance, it locked up 3 months later from a bad relay in the K-harness
No trouble with the 03, I installed a CLB soon after the purchase
