Every time we have a thread here about garages, I see one, two and the occasional three car garage. All of them are nice and the owners should be proud of them, but doesn't anyone own a BIG garage? Doesn't anyone have a barn in the back that holds four of five cars?
I'm planning on building such a garage in a couple of years and I'd love to see what others have done, but I never see a thing here.
Any big boys out there?
Mine will hold six cars and the corvette is the only car that lives there.
I'm looking for a new house, and just looked at one that had an attached 4 car, and a separate building with another 4-car, with an office above it. I loved it, but it's miles out in the country.
I'm in the design stage of my new house it will have a five car L shape attached garage. from strait on it will look like a three car. pics in about two years when its completed.......
Room for 5 in mine, including 2 4x4 trucks. Still, I had to add a shed for the camper, car trailer, and horse trailer. Just never enough garage space!!
I have basically a basement garage but it is at ground level here in the GA low country. 34 x 40 with 18 X 28 to the side (1800+ sf total) and two living stories on top (40' at the peak). Downside: only 10 ft tall although I opted for 8X10 doors (2) and one 7X8. Other downside: 17 steps to 1st floor was a breeze 20 years ago but with a pair of titanium knees, things have changed.
It holds 3 cars and 22' boat (reason for 8' tall doors). Wife's car and whatever I'm not driving go tandem on the left; the boat and other car (usually the Tahoe) on the right. I have to park boat & Tahoe at slight angle to fit. The 18X28 can hold a small car but is currently a wood shop with a 16' rip capability. Sawdust can be a bitch.
We're looking in SC for something smaller as we rarely use the boat anymore but it's hard to find a 3 car garage without a monster house & large yard.
My recommendations: go with a taller door; it gives you more flexibility. Don't permanently tieup any floor space e.g. built in benches other than a lift. You will have to sell one day and your needs may change. Good luck and budget 20% more.
My garage is 24' x 40' and is attached to the house. When we built the house, it was supposed to be a 4-car garage but my weakness for cars has made it a 5-car garage (3 in the back and 2 in the front). I do not have anything along the sides of it to allow for the 3 cars in the back. It is a little tight where the 3 cars are but it is manageable.
You know, one reason I made it a 4-car garage was so I WOULDN'T buy a fifth car!!
This is an illness I just can't shake!
Gene of Forum Vendor Kar Shop has a garage in his backyard that holds about 15 Corvettes and you can open all the doors and walk around. Very impressive when he makes a u-turn with his Rollback or Crew Cab Dually!
the little one is what is left of the 3-car. we bulldozed off the third bay and added the 28 x 48 toybox. 10' and 14' ceilings and a 2-post lift. during hurricane rita last year we had 9 vehicles in there.
drywall is done, just need to get it taped and floated. the wifey has a mural she wants to paint on the wall, car/corvette related. then the floor, again.
I don't have pictures, but I have a 6 car attached garage, with sink and work table. It's got a suburban and an expeditioin plus the vette and two other mid size cars. So it definatley comes in handy.
