Default Tire Sizes

Just put 18x10.5 wheels and 305x35x18 tires on the back of my 03 vert. Now I think I need a little more beef up front. Any problem with going with a 17x9.5 wheel with a 275x40x17 tire? The tire is a little shorter that stock and about 1.5 inches wider. It will still give me the 1" difference between front and back.Really not interested in buying new wheels so I want to stay with the 17/18 combo. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Slik

Any help greatly apprciated.

That is a perfect size tire for that wheel.

The OEM tire on a Z06 is 265/40X17 so you are right in the ballpark of the OEM sizes.

By the way, OEM rears on the Z06 are 295/35x18 so you are close there too..

Your suggestions are perfect

And, like my good buddy Glenn stated above, you are on the money! A 10.5 inch wide rear wheel is ideal with an 305mm width tire. And, with those specific rear tires and wheels in mind, a 275mm width tire is perfect installed upon a 9.5 inch wide front wheel, and, completes the combo. Great set up! Well done!

Slik, where are you coming up with the 1" difference? It seems to me that the circumference of the 305/30-18 is 25.2", and the circumference of a 275/40-17 is 25.7" (which is basically identical to the 245/45-17 OEM size). (BTW, I use this site to calculate sizes: www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html)
You definitely don't want the front tire's circumference to be bigger than the rear. Now if you go to a 275/35-17 front tire, you will be OK.

I used the chart o Nittotire.com, It shows the 305/35/18 with a diameter of 26.42 and the 275/40/17 at 25.59. Wonder what the difference is?

You should be OK with the sizes you mention. Good luck.

Slik and I have been trading PMs and he clarified that the back tire is a 305/35-18, not a 305/30-18 as he originally stated. I see he has since edited his original post to reflect this. Obviously makes a big difference, and highlights the importance of communicating clearly and accurately. BTW, the 35 profile tire will clearly work with the 275/40-17.

Maybe I'm just a bit cranky this morning, but I'm appalled that no one else seemed to notice this and was telling him that it (the sizes he originally stated) was OK. If these forums are going to be useful and serve a function more than simply asking what color floor mat we like best, this is
Kind of makes me leery asking for any technical advice unless I'm comfortable that the responder has a clue
