I know this has been asked before, but is it considered normal on a Z06 to have some valve noise? I can sit in the car and @ idle I can hear a tapping noise and I can also hear it @ higher rpm's ,like a lifter/tappet sound. This car makes different sounds that my 2000 coupe and I'm just not sure whats normal for a Z ! also when I let the clutch out and leave it in neutral the rattling is loud and @ other times its not to bad. any input is appreciated.
these noises are driving me :(
Funny, the ls1 in my coupe does the same thing. I'm thinking about pulling the pushrods and checking them. Even though I'm under warrenty, I'm afraid to let Chevy touch it
I have the same noises in mine and have discussed them here before.I've
been assured by many that they are normal, and I've come to accept that.
I don't notice them as much as I used to and the car runs fine. You can drown them out with the exhaust or the radio when you're just cruise'n. :yesnod:
I have the same noises on my '01 Z06. I have also been told that they are normal, but they just don't sound good when your sitting at a light with your new $50k sports car.
My 2001 Z06 has 1300 miles on it and is realitively quiet yet. Remember the Z06 uses different fuel injectors than the LS1 and some of what you are hearing is fuel injector "snap". The early vin 2001's have some piston slap in them as tGM didn't utilize coded pistons until aroung May, 2001. Piston slap is caused by tolerences in the bores of the engine block with non fitted or "non coded" pistons. I discussed this at Corvettes at Carlisle with two GM engineers. The piston slap will not harm the engine its just noisy, especially upon cold start and until the engine reaches full operating temperature.
The factory went to a coded or fitted piston assembly in late Apirl or early May 2001 to illeviate this problem. The new ring sets didn't appear until 2002 and all 2002 LS6 motors also included coded or fitted pistons.

I had the valve noise in my 01 Z06, I was told it was "normal". I sold it & bought an 02 Z06, it has the same valve train noise, I had hpoed it would be a little quieter than the 01. I guess it's just the price we pay for extreme performance! :D
Both 01 and 02 LS6 engines will have slightly more valve noise than LS1s and the 02 LS6 will make a teensy-weensy more noise than the 01.
Why?
Simple. The camshaft profiles are more aggressive and when you open and close the valves more and quicker, there's a little bit of noise.
Keyrist you whiners have never *really* heard valve noise from a Corvette. 327/375s from back in 64-65 or mechanical lifter Big-Blocks...now THAT was valve noise--the joyful noise of America's Sports Car.
Welcome to the wonderful world of the small block Chevy. Every Corvette I've owned had valve noise of one degree or another. Hib's right. If you think this is bad, listen to an old big block. Of course to some, this is not noise, this is music. :D
2002 Z06 here and the valves also dance a bit on mine.I too listed a post and was assured that it's just music the LS6 is accustomed to making.
Mine however is intermittent pending on engine tempature. It disappears at W.O.T. however the exhaust bleeds over the engine tone.
:yesnod: Enjoy the car :yesnod:
