Just sold my 2005 CTS-V today and now I can concentrate soley on my 98 A4. It is all stock. So my question to all the forum members is what mods should I start with? I want to get basically 400rwhp without a S/C. So what will it take to get that. All help is greatly appreciated.
So heads, cam, and headers will get me 400rwhp? So I guess if I do those 3 and do full exhaust that will put me over 400. What about gearing in the rear?
doing heads, cam, exhuast, and everything else that comes along with it wont be cheap.
heads new or used-800-2400
cam - 250-550
ls6 intake manifold- 400 (if you dont already have one) newer cars 01 up had them!
headers-600-1400(whole exhaust system)
UD pulley-200
pushrods-130
retainers-100-150
misc. parts ...ie timing chain, gaskets, - 200-400
install- depends where you live... 1400-1600
tuning-300-500
around 4k for everything on the low end...
but if your going this route a d looking for a cam i got a G5X3 for 325 shipped tou you if you want it!!

1.Let the car breath.....Callaway Honker
2.Headers of your choice.....LG,Dyntech,Kooks...also a catback would be nice to do at the same time....B&B,Corsa,Borla...personal taste.
3.Gears and stall..........3:90 gears and Yank ss3600 stall
4.H/C......lots of proven combos to choose from
The gears and stall would give you the best SOTP improvement...good luck
What is the stall converter for? I think my stock gears are 2:73 should I just go up to the next level of gears so I can still cruise pretty good on the highway. For exhaust I would like to get a Ti exhaust from I heard the sound is good and it is lighter.
I began with the heads/cam, header, LT route etc and eventually bolted a SC on top of it all. If I had to do it all over again I would go straight to the blower and skip all else. The beauty of the supercharger is that you are only in the boost when you want to be. All other times you wouldn't even use it or notice it (other than a slight whine). That allows you to maintain the stock-like reliability without wearing out components unnecessarily. Also if you don't plan on keeping the car forever you can reverse back to stock much quicker that if you did heads/cam and all of the other bolt-ons. Just my opinion of course.
I agree with the people suggesting the heads/cam/headers route. I would also upgrade to 3.42 gears. You can get them fairly cheap from someone upgrading their 6 speed to 3.73, 3.90, or 4.10s. When I upgraded to 3.90s, I offered my low mileage 3.42 rearend for my core charge from DTE (I think that was around $600). No one took me up on it, so I sent it back to DTE for my core refund. I'm sure you could find a similar deal.
I bought the first part of my exhaust system today. I bought a Ti Exhaust. Now what I need to is What headers, hi flow cats, and or xpipe do I need to have a straight up replacement without haveing to modify or cut pipes.
you can purchase LG or Dynatech longtube headrs which are two of the most popular and top performers....either of the two will come with an X-pipe and the cats are optional. Depending on where you live i would just run catless...gives you a few more ponies and won't be too loud with your Ti's....I personally don't run cats with my Corsa Indy's and Dynatech LT's and i love it.
I started with a Vararam intake and now just ordered a 3600 stall converter and a set of 3.73 gears. From there I will do my exhaust front to back and then continue as need be. This set-up might not give you the rwhp number you're looking for, but it sure might feel like you have it.
