..not a flame. A serious question. Im thinking about getting 4.10's in a stock 6speed vette to get more "oomph" in the seat ( and Ill NEVER have a need to drive faster that 160mph).
while reading and talking to fellow gear heads when I say "4.10" I get a responce saying
"you loose your first gear"
"the car will become un stable"
"not for a daily driver"
"You will have to buy new tires every 6 months"
"You will create a fold in the space/time fabric and destroy the universe"
but the math in the final drive ratio does not sound that bad?
any first hand experience out there?
The fellow that started this thread was asking about the rear because he is considering my '02 coupe, which has a 4:10 rear. I have about 400rwhp, and I have been very happy with this change. As someone else stated, it puts 6th gear "in play." Maybe it has something to do with living in the northeast. With the stock rear turning 90mph at 2K in 6th, where are we going with this? I'd rather compress all that power into quicker acceleration than top end. If I kept the pedal down long enough to enjoy all that top end, I run out of road in this part of the country. Since most of us really dig the torque of our vettes, the better gearing really makes it a blast to drive. Yet, I could still get 25+ mpg on long trips, even with the cam. If you're going to mod your vette, (which usually means to go faster), the rear gets you a lot of bang for the buck. My .03, adjusted for inflation.

I speak from experience. My car has 4:10's. Great bang for the buck.
I recently got a set of 4.10s. I have basically every bolt on and it has been the best bang for the buck so far. The SOTP acceleration is increased a ton. You won't be disappointed if you buy a car with them already in it. Hurts the gas milage by 1-2 mpg but otherwise they are great. Just buy the car and stop being a wuss
4:10s are great for straight line acceleration, however, that's not without a price. Other's have already mentioned the loss of top end speed which doesn't affect 95% of people on this board, so I won't go into that.
The other down side is that you're in each gear for a shorter period of time, so in an extreme situation such as a road course, you'll have to shift more often, and every one of those shifts is costing you time, so you can end up with slower lap times even though you're accelerating faster. The other issue that comes up with lower gears and shifting more often is transmission heat, so you've got to pay more attention to transmission cooler and such.
For the 1/4 mile guys, if you've got enough power you end up having to shift into 5th, where a 3.90 or 3.73 could keep you in 4th.
