Default Windshield replace!

Besides be really upset about this I need to ask what do I need to know about having the HUD windshield replaced on my '01. A rock or something came out of nowhere or probably kicked up by a group of semi's well in front of me the other day on I-4. I heard the click on the windshield but didn't think it damaged it. I was wrong. On Sunday while washing it I noticed the crack. Today it's worst and it's getting radial cracks going away from the primary crack.

I need to call my insurance company tomorrow but I'd like to know up front what I need to know in advanced. Obviously it's a specialized windshield, but what about the trim should that be replaced with OEM new pieces? Does the upper weatherstrip along the A pillar get affected by a w/s replacement or is this generation different from the 4th gen's?

Any other precautions to have a heads up on?

I cannot tell you how upset I am about this. The original owner had it almost 6 years preserved it not a mark anywhere, it still smells new inside and I have it a little over two weeks and look what happened.

I am not looking forward to having it all torn up to replace it. Things just never are right on stuff like this.

Yeah I presume the following is what should be ordered:

E6
43R-009047
Shaded HUD
Solar Ray
Safety FLO LITE
LAMISAFE
DOT 376 M534

I'm concerned and interested in exactly what is required to be removed to do the replacement and what other parts should be replaced with it.

Haven't had mine replaced, but understand replacing the trim is more expensive than the average car. I wouldn't worry about it who ever replaces the glass will put on new trim.

From what you described it will be insured subject to your collision deductible.

I believe on my policy first they want to repair and in this case it's cracked you can catch your finger nail on it from both inside and outside. So then I suppose it will be the 100. deduct.

I have had a windshield replaced on another vehicle in the past, zero deductable (State Farm). I believe it is law in Florida that insurance must replace a cracked windshield N/C.

Default windshield

There were some posts a few months back about how difficult it is to replace our windshields. The poster said he had nothing but trouble with the install and recommended that anyone who had to have one replaced make sure that the glass co. had done C5s before.

Just had mine replaced in my 99 and the glass installer did not have to replace a thing. The upper trim and the side pillar trim is removed to process the swap but a good glass installer will most likely not damage anything. I called my insurance co to set it up and the glass co called took the info and ordered the proper glass. The targa top will need to be put back in as soon as the seals are reapplied as this helps keep everything in location while the urethane cures.Safelite glass did mine and I am very happy with the result.Make sure you ask for a corvette specialist and if you have to wait an extra day it is worth it.

Thanks I think that is who my ins co uses. I'm suppose to get a call today from them.

In FL, insurance companies do as they will. The have extreme lobbiest to control the legislature to write laws all in their favor.

First they always attempt to repair and claim if the crack is 6" or less it will be repaired. If it cracks again then they replace after you jump through a bunch of hoops. In this case which I explained it appears multiple cracks are occurring. They said it goes to the home office first then they decide how much they will pay minus the deduct and you pay the rest. I don't expect this to be a deduct only, I'm sure it is going to cost me big time. That's what you get when you run accident free stay with the same company for 14 years and have no tickets. As the ad says ..... is on your side (until something happens).

I'm in Florida and just had mine replaced last weekend. It took two people and about two hours to replace. In contrast it took one man and a half an hour with my pickup. I installed the HUD myself and specificly asked for the HUD glass as it did not come with it originally. I really don't notice any difference between the different types of glass as far as viewing the HUD goes. They replaced the moulding and said that was standard procedure. Safelite replaced mine and I was very satisfied with there work. Best of all they came to my house to do the work. Total for parts and labor would have been around $500.00. Insurance paided it all. Good Luck!

I have to have mine replaced, and I don't even have covered damage. All out of my pocket. About $1600 for the OEM windshield. There goes a cam & kit.

Take yours to Burke Corvettes in Maitland. Best Vette bodyshop in central Florida.

Good luck!

This is why I stay of interstates... damn trucks!
Sorry to hear about your situation but soon it'll be as good as new. I'd call a few shops and ask if they have anyone experienced with changing C5 windshields. I've seen the process and it hurts to watch.
They are supposed to replace the weather stripping to maintain a good seal.

Damn! Is it physically possible to pay more!!!!!

I've never heard of $1,600 for a windshield. Either it was one of those special windshield/hooker deals, or I would make a conserted effort to steer a wide swath around Burke's.

Its not just "damn trucks" Bud. I am a truck driver and I get things hitting me all the time kicked up by all kinds of vehicles. I especially love the cigarettes thrown out of cars that hit my grill and windshield. I got a chip in my C5 windhield this weekend from another vette. Fortunately I think the chip can be repaired. Don't forget, if you have it, a truck helped get it there.

It primarily is. They're idiots. There's too many of them. They putz around in the left lane holding up traffic. Half of them can't stay in their own lane. Some of them drive like they're in a sports car. All the while kicking up rocks and destroying roads with overloaded cargo.

1600 sounds way too deep !! Im with you kanmer !!! The architect must be upset after catching his wife with a trucker or something !!!! Trucks are no worse then any other vehicle on the road... Probly better !! you show them some respect and they pay it pack all the time. It's usually the little sports cars doing some really stupid things in front of 20.000lb loads that cause the big troubles... Get over it!~
