Just installed the starmate in the ash tray area and the antenna next to the trunk hinge (convertible). Run the wires hidden wher plastic meets the carpet, passed the brake handle and come behind the ash tray (remove it). Plug power cord in armrest power plug and run it the same way up to ash tray area. This will allow you to completely close the ash tray door concealing the starmate. A little velcro to stick. 10 minutes work, invisible and full sugnal strength.
Right now I have my Sirius Sportster antenna on the dashboard(passenger side, right up against the windshield corner). I'm thinking of moving it to the rear bumper area like alot of others have done..

Make the metal piece long enough to span the bolts and bend 90 degrees such that you have a ledge wide enough to mount the antenna and parallel to the ground. Loosen the nuts on the bolts, slip the fabricated bracket over the bolts, replace the nuts. Don't over tighten them. Using the 'stcky pad' that should have come with your radio set (If not, get 3M weather srtip 2 sided tape at auto parts store), fasten the antenna (facing up) to the bracket. Drill a small hole up behind the trunk light area and feed the antenna cable through. Run your antenna wire through the interior to your radio. Reinstall the tail light. The rear fascia is plastic and won't attenuate the received signal. Mine works like a charm, no need to mount on the body.
I did this same thing except I used steel for the bracket and let the magnet in the antenna do it's job. Also mounted it directly behind the license plate/backup light housing. More room to work. The antenna grommet at the right rear of the inner tub was slit with a razor and I laid the new antenna alonside the factory antenna (new one is very thin), siliconed the slit and reinstalled the grommet in the factory hole.
Put mine on the top of the rear window in my AE coupe with black RTV. Ran the wires in and around without cutting a hole. Very clean and hardly noticable.
I have XM in my Tahoe and I don't lose signal under bridges or in parking garages!
I'm guessing that you can get a "terrestrial" XM signal if you live/work in Oklahoma City. On most Sirius systems, you can view the terrestrial and satellite signal strength for antenna aiming purposes - maybe XM allows you to do this, as well. I know that in Seattle, I don't lose signal until I get pretty deep under ground in a parking garage, because the terrestrial signal is very good.
I have often wondered how it would work under the head liner on my FRC
Not a bad idea... try it and let us know. I've got mine on top of the passenger-side wheel well, in the trunk of my FRC. I used a piece of velcro (the hook side, not the loop side) to attach it to the carpet. Works great for me. I probably don't have as much signal as I have in my other car (non-Corvette) with the antenna on the roof, but it's enough so the audio doesn't cut out unless I'm in a heavily wooded area where my other radio cuts out, too. I don't know if this would be possible in a coupe, but it should work in convertibles and FRCs. The best part - no drilling/cutting/etc and very simple to install and run the antenna wire up to the dash area from there...
I have mine resting inside the hatch area on the ledge where the hatch deck/lid's connectors meet their locks. Theres just enough room for the flat antenna to rest up there. (Signal loss through fiberglass is nonexistant...) You can close the deck lid and barely see it, plus it's easy to stuff the antenna wire behind the carpet and route it around the inside of the hatch area underneath the carpet and up towards the front of the car!
