I just checked out the GM website in the Canada and US variety and noticed a huge discrepancy. The MSRP on the C6 vert in the US site is $53,335 and the Canadian site is $80,665 canadian. That is a huge difference considering $80,665 canadian is $70,342.25 US that is quite a difference, for that kind of difference you could buy a new C6 and a decent C5 as well. GM canada is raping us. That is why you don't see too many C6 up here. I live just 20 minuted from the border.... Somebody is making a killing.... Can someone explain this to me

Sure it's not taxes? Don't you have a VAT up there?

The quote I gave was MSRP on vettes on either side of the border. I am not sure what VAT is, but our sales tax is 13% plus luxury tax of 3% ( Luxury tax is anything over $55,000)

It sucks doesn't it. With the global market place you would think GM could do more than what they are doing to level the playing field. Any serious buyers are importing new from the States. I am sure there are some dealers down there just waiting for you to contact them and they will take care of everything that needs to be done to get you the car you want.

Besides the GST and battery and A/C fees. Do you still need an inspection on a brand new car? What other fees and other time consuming garbage do you have to endure to import my dream vette??

You'll need the inspection. All cars coming from the US need an inspection, and you'll need the vehicle recall notice from GM. Didnt realize there was a battery fee, never paid for one when I brought my car across in January?

The fees (if I'm not mistaken) are a $241 border charge, $100 for the AC, and between $100 and $300 for the inspections, of which one is done at the border and 2 are done in Canada, and depending on where you live, 98% of the places that are allowed to do the inspections are Canadian Tire stores - of which is a complete rip off. One thing to notice is make sure you have a copy of the vehicle manual, since the recall will probably indicate child car seats. Your manual shows how the seats can be fitted, but Canadian Tire almost disallowed my vehicle since they kept saying the recall hadnt been done (until I showed them in the manual).

I cant remember the time limit for the inspections, I think its within 2 months or something like that (but dont quote me).

I know just what you mean

The UK price is at least $ for £ (at $1.85 per £1) Add the dealers mark up and the C6 is not so cheap

No doubt... But I live 20 minutes from the border. At least with that distance can almost be justified. In half an hour I can drive to a dealership where the price is almost $20,000 difference!!! Thats a true great white north vette tax.

I'm pretty sure that is an import tax imposed by the Franadian Gov't. Well at least you have cheaper drugs?

I'm sure getting one across the border can't be too hard, our borders are almost non-existant!

Sorry for the playful chiding, I wish you luck!

I feel your pain brother. Not any different here in Ontario. Which is why I bought my C5 in Florida. Someone told me once (fairly reliable source but certainly no guru) that GM's main Corvette market is the US (obviously) and given the overall sales numbers in the US, they build discounts into the cars...Canada on the other hand sells only 3% of what the States sells in Vettes. Given its a secondary market, they figure they can get full pop and not have to discount them...sorry...long definition of the Great White North Vette "tax"

The issue is that MSRP has not caught up with exchange. for most of the 90's and up until about 2 years ago, there was an arbitrage opportunity to buy a new car in Canada and to sell it in the US and make a profit. At the time, when you bought a new car in Canada, you were supposed to sign an area on the contract that the car was for your personal use and Canada and that you would not resell the car in the U.S. For about 10 years Canadians could buy cars cheaper (on an exhchange adjusted basis than Americans)

The Canadian dollar has gone from about $0.65 cent per $ US in late '04 to about $0.90 now. While US inflation has been around 3% ,the Canadian dollar has appreciated 25%.

The pendelum has just swung the other way.... It will self correct over time...

Before you flame... I am Canadian.....

I don't think G.M. is the issue

Cigarettes 1 pack 4.00 US 9.00 Canada
1 Liter Canadian Club 13.00 US 35.00 Canada

Canadian product cheaper in the US then in Canada, what's with that

We are the most overtaxed nation in the world... Tax freedom day is months after yours... The only thing stopping us from revolution is the fact that we are unarmed.... We can't even fight back... Defenseless and pathetic... But we have public healthcare and better beer

France-Canadian, or Frenadian, French-Canadian. I actually said it by accident one night while sipping too many VO&7s, and it kinda caught on. I have a good buddy in Toronto and we both couldn't speak for minutes we were laughing so hard.

Yes, Canada has many good things, like:
Shania Twain, oh wait she lives in Nashville, er...
Joe Canada, nope he moved to Hollywood, maybe...
Bob and Doug McKenzie, were they really Canadian?
I will say I got an education in Vancouver, come to find out that Canadians don't drink Moosehead, they make that for us poor yanks as a joke, same with Molson. So I drink LeBatt's Blue when in Canada so I don't stand out as a tourist

Sorry, this is really getting off subject, but you had to ask!
(I won't elaborate on the France, Canadian connection as it was all in good fun at the time and would probably be taken out of context here)

On the subject though, I agree that market imbalances will work themselves out in time.

There was an article about this in The National Post sometime ago and if my memory serves me correct, it has to do with GM not having fully equilibrated the U.S. $ with the Canuck buck. There will always be a discrepency, but this is outright rape.

You referred to the price of a regular C6, you should see the Canadian prices for a C6 Z06! Brutal!

It is really nonsense. The car I was referring to was a vert. But the price of the Z06 fully loaded is absolute robbery....

I think you may have invented something there.... But there are not many Franadians east of Ontario... I am happy to say
Shania Twain actually lives in Switzerland
