My FOB is no longer working. Stopped after I took a peek to see what battery it used since the range was getting short. Following the DIC instructions dont do the trick. When I get the message to hold lock and unlock, it acts as if the FOB is no longer transmitting. Have taken care to make sure new battery is in tight and correct polarity.
Any tricks out there for these things? Replacement seems to be around a $100 which is just outright theft. But, the dang things are so useful when they work.
Just corrected a similar problem with my 2000 fob today. Followed instructions in owners manual regarding resynchronization. I just held both lock and unlock buttons on the fob at the same time for about 7 seconds+ and I got a beep from the car. The car was not running and the ignition was in the off position. I have done this several times and it always works. You still may need a new battery which are available in most drugstores with the hearing aid and watch batteries. Good luck.

Mine was getting short range also 2000 Vert. I replaced battery with new and made sure it had good contact with the tabs in the fob. Reset as above and it has been working like new.

About two months ago I was having the same problem with my '00 fob. Replaced the battery, did the resync (both by holding down the buttons and through the DIC), and ended up solving the problem by getting a new fob. Guess the old one just wore out.
Transmitter Programming/Synchronization
Each transmitter has a unique Vehicle Access Code (VAC) that changes every 5 seconds. If a transmitter or receiver is replace, each transmitter must be programmed to the vehicle's receiver. Entering a specific button sequence on the DIC, up to three transmitters can be programmed into the receiver. After programming the transmitters to the vehicle, the receiver will update this code every 5 seconds in order to match the code programmed in the transmitter.
The transmitter may not communicate or become out of synchronization with the receiver if any of the following situations occurs:
The transmitter battery is disconnected.
The vehicle battery is disconnected.
The transmitter and the vehicle are separated for 2 weeks or more.
The receiver is disconnected.
Perform the synchronizing procedure if the transmitter does not communicate or becomes out of synchronization with the receiver. If the transmitter and/or receiver are replaced, preform the following programming procedure:
Programming Transmitters
Turn the ignition to ON.
Turn the radio to OFF.
Press the RESET button in order to clear any IPC warning messages.
Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank.
Press and hold the RESET button for 3 seconds.
Press the OPTIONS button until FOB TRAINING message is displayed.
Press the RESET button in order to begin the programming sequence. The message HOLD LK + UNLK 1ST FOB will be displayed.
Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the first transmitter for 15 seconds. The IPC will indicate when that transmitter is programmed and when to proceed to the next. Repeat this procedure for each additional transmitter or press the OPTIONS button to exit.
Programming Cancellation
The receiver will cancel the programming sequence if any of the following conditions occur:
The program mode is exited through the DIC.
The ignition is turned to OFF.
The three transmitters have been programmed.
The RFA system has been in the program mode for longer than 2 minutes and no transmitters have been learned.
If the program mode is cancelled with less than three codes stored, the receiver will only accept the codes just stored. If the program mode is cancelled before any code is stored, the codes still remain valid.
The receiver retains all current access codes in memory if either of the following conditions occur:
A programming sequence is interrupted.
The battery is disconnected.
Synchronizing Transmitters
Preform the following procedure if a transmitter cannot communicate or becomes out of synchronization with the receiver:
Move a programmed transmitter within range.
Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 7 seconds.
The horn will chirp once when the transmitter is synchronized. Repeat this procedure for each additional transmitter if needed.
I picked up my 2000 and when I got it home I realized the FOB didn't work - never thought to try it when I was at the dealership. I replaced the battery and tried the two re-sync methods but still wouldn't work. The FOB's do seem to have a life span and will sometimes die, though I'm not sure why. Anyway, I bought one from that auction site and haven't had any problems with the replacement. Just be sure to get one specifically for the 2000 - it's a little different than the other years so don't buy one that's being marketed as fitting all '97 - '04 models.
If you're interested, PM me and I'll give the sellers name I bought mine from.
If you've followed the directions above and you know the battery is also good, you may need a new fob. Check Ebay as I've seen them on there cheaper than what dealers want. The 2000 fob only works on 2000 cars, so make sure you search for the codes/models on the back of your current fob.
... you know.. that's why I love the forum. Recently, one of my remotes quit working. I finally went to the battery store today and the guy tested it. It was fine. Anyway,, I don't have a manual, so I would have put off reprogramming it, but when i saw this post reminding me how to do it, I immediately ran out with the flip-flops and...BANG! The Forum-always right on time!
