When he graduates in April, I'll be out there in California to see it.

Can everyone in the C5 community give him a farewell???

Thanks
My son finished his second tour of duty in Iraq this past May. I'm glad that he is home now. Your son will be fine.

It will be 40 years this coming October that I entered boot camp in San Diego, and there are things I learned way back then that I still use on a daily basis. Your son will do fine and I guarantee that you'll be so very proud of him on graduation day. Semper Fi

Got to this post late - hopefully your son will be able to read all of these farewells before he takes off…twenty-four years ago I stepped on the very same footprints at MCRD San Diego...Feb 14, 1983 to be exact - what a Valentines Day that was!

First of all, CONGRATS Dad, you've raised a Patriot, the blood coursing through his veins is like that of our fathers and grandfathers who proudly served before us. Your son is blessed in that he is healthy and willing to sacrifice for our country. Some still don't get the fact that the best offense is a strong forward deployed defense. In other words, I'd rather tear up someone else's back yard taking the fight to them then to wait for them to arrive at my door step.

Second, you son is going to earn the title "Marine". A soldier is in the Army, a sailor is in the Navy, a airman is in the Air Force and a Marine is a Marine…I love that one...no offense to my fellow service members...hey, Navy/Air Force, I needed a ride here and there, Army, you always had my back when we were kicking doors in !

Seriously, your son will receive some of the best military training the world knows and as others here have attested to, it changed me forever. I lived in Arkansas for 18 years; I grew up at MCRD San Diego.

Tell your son thanks for me, too. I have two nephews serving in the Air Force, one of them in Iraq. We're very proud of them, as well as all of our military! God bless him!

December 17th, 1990 was the day that changed my life...When that bus pulled up and an angry DI got on and started yelling, I thought my world was at an end. 13 wks later, I graduated some of the most difficult training in the world, and that training has helped me today be a success. If will be grueling, but on the day of graduation to be called MARINE, is a day that will be with him forever.

Be proud dad, he is about to enter one of the most distinguised outfits IN THE WORLD. Life-takers and heart-breakers, every one. My father, father-in-law, and myself served in three different conflicts in three different periods, and the training is just as demanding then as it is now, however it may be in a different way. Marines are the elite, even the Army thinks so (otherwise they would not have tried to disband the Spec Ops twice to bring the Marines into the Army as their Spec Ops force).

Be Proud...Once a Marine, he will always be a MARINE. Hoorah!

No as lean, not as mean, but still a Marine. Like they say, the change is forever.

WOW!..........You guys & gals are something. I cant believe the overwhelming response to my thread. Trust me, I am glowing with pride today. As I type, my eyes are filled with tears.

As the post says, he was to ship out tomorrow........Today we were going to hang out together & maybe take a ride in the Vette before his departure. At 11:00am this morning he got a call on his cell phone from his buddy at home(whom BTW is also shipping out to MCBC) saying that the SGT. was on the way to get him.....NOW!!!

It seems there was a miscommunication & my son interpeted 11:00 tomorrow as the pick up date....well, its actually the time he's flying out!

Man, I am so disappointed that we didnt have as much time as we'd hoped. His Mom.........she was crying on the phone already....!
This is alot tougher than I thought it would be.

Thank you so much for the support. I will talk with my son tonight from Denver in the hotel he's in & get him to log on here to see the CF response! Thanks guys/gals.

Man you Gotta be proud of him. I am and I don't know him. What I do know is that the freedom that we enjoy is due to the sacrifice of our military and their families. The next time you talk to him let him know that another American family is grateful and indebted to him, and his family, for his service to our country.

Best of luck to your son from a retired "soldier" and Vietnam Veteran. My son joined the Marines in 1990 and did his tour in Desert Storm. Be proud when he earns the title of Marine as I was when my son accomplished this task. Good luck, from a retired First Sergeant.

Your son has begun a journey that will forever change his life in a positive way. Just as I told my own son a few years ago when he joined the Navy... The military allows you to meet true life-long friends because you share similar hardships. Make the most of it.

My thanks to your son for serving his country
