Per the owners manual, the shift light comes on at 5750 rpm, like a drag racing shift light. The redline is 6000, so it gives you reaction time to keep from hitting the rev limiter.
Mine works, I've only used it a few times to see.
When I searched for a Vette, IT HAD TO HAVE A HUD. I love that thing!!
it is SO COOL, especially at night. If anything, just for the speed indicator alone, it's worth it. I find it is so much easier to monitor and adjust my speed with the display within my field of vision, I wish all cars had them!

I have the HUD but find that my eyes always go to the speedo and tach in the dash, especially when I feel the need to get into it and shift at redline. I guess I'm just used to looking at needles over the years.
The problem with the dash gauges is how poorly they can be seen. Everytime I am on the track I have trouble seeing the gauges on the left side of the dash since no matter what direction I seem to be going in they are almost always in a shadow. The speedo has poor resolution so it is hard to tell how fast you are going by looking at it. The only instrument that is somewhat easy to read at a quick glance is the tach. The analog HUD tach could be better if they gave it better resolution. So I put the tach, speed and oil pressure on the HUD, oil temp on the DIC (also easily seen) and mostly use the shift light to judge when to shift. It starts flashing several miles per hour before you get to the rev limiter in each gear. As for it being distracting it doesn't bother me at all. I wish it would go a little higher into the field of view and was a little bigger so they could improve the tach resolution and put digital numbers in for the coolant temp, oil pressure gauge and volt meter. The only gauges that need to be analog are the tach and gas gauge.

Would'nt it be helpful if our HUDs also displayed "Fuel Pressure" (especially for us FI guys)... instead of the gas gauge... Bill
I found it a tad busy for my taste with the default display.
For the last several years I only display MPH and have gotten to the point where I never look down. I too turn off my dash lights at night...who needs 'em.
I think if there was something I'd change on it's display is the RPM I'd rather see them displayed as 4 digits about 1/3rd the size of the speedo value and off to the upper left of the speedo value. I think it be much easier to interpret by glancing for two sets of digits rathen seeing a digit set and moving bar.

It even works on the A4. Checked it out just yesterday
I cant believe anyone that has HUD for any length, hasn't noticed the shif light. Some of you guys need to let these cars do what they were made to do.
Just put in Meatloaf " Bad out of Hell" and the tistorone in your braine will tell the muscle in your right foot what to do to make the electrical connection to the HUD shift light. Mark
