Default Battery Charger

Guys,

Just one more quick question before I put the car away. I have one of those battery chargers, that keeps the battery at peak levels when the car is not running...

Do I just put this on the car for 24-48 hours before I am ready to drive it in the spring? Or are these things suppose to be hooked up for the entire 3 months it is going to be in the garage?

Thanks.

If its a Battery Tender, it can be kept on the car for the entire winter. Mine stays on all of the time.

It depends on the manufacturer and the instructions with the product. A BATTERY TENDER or CTEK maintenance/float charger can be left connected indefinitely. They have internal electronic protection against over charging, power surges, reversed polarity, etc. An offshore knockoff...maybe not...depends on the electronics protection.
I leave my BATTERY TENDER PLUS maintenance/float chargers on continuously during the winter and periods of non use...just don't forget to unhook them when you're anxiously ready to take that first spring drive.

I've got a question. I bought a CTEK 3300 and the instructions say to attach the ground clamp to the engine if the battery is in the car or if the battery is out of the car, ground to the negative (-) post on the battery itself. What difference does it make? I'd rather connect the both the clamps to their respective posts on the battery.

That probably has to do with lessening the chances of a spark igniting the out gasses on a lead acid battery. If you have an OPTIMA battery, it isn't a problem as they don't out gas.

That's what I do with mine. It maintains the charge when needed.
