is it jst me or is it stupid to not have a trunk release backup?
We do! It's just not doing you much good at this moment with the top down. It's designed so if "Vito" locks you in your own trunk you can escape by pulling the cable (at rear trunk bulkhead behind the cargo net) and sprint to safety. The suggestion to put a charger on your battery to open the trunk solonoid sounds like a good plan. Good luck.

You can throw it in the trunk if you have any doubts about your battery, also. Never have to worry about reverse polarity blowing an alternator or how you are going to get another car close enough to jump.
They have them everywhere, parts stores, Harbor Freight, Costco.
I dont think you would ever regret the money.
Other than the fact that it's also LOCKED in the trunk with your jumper cables!

The charge on these palm sized chargers is off the hook. I keep one in every offsprings car. Even now. They're 30! These chargers are lifesavers. No messy cords to have in the trunk either.
Sent the wife to Florida one year and we knew the battery would be dead in the van. Sent her with a Battery Tender Jumper Pack. That van fired right up after sitting for 5 months. The lights wouldn't come on in the car it was that dead. The lithium battery worked like a charm.
