Anyone remove the body side moldings without damage? or does it require re-paint? Did some early year c5's come with 5 speeds?
Lastly, I see FRC's advertised as hardtops and not FRC's are these hidden finds by the dealers selling them?
I'm not sure about the first question.
I don't know of any corvettes with 5 speeds. I think what you mean is a 6 speed. I have a 97 (first year c5) with a 6 speed.
FRC is a hardtop (Fixed Roof Coupe), the other hardtop is a Z06. Then you have the coupe, which has a removable top (almost like a really big t-top. Lastly, you have the convertible. Those are the only body styles for the c5.
Hope this helps a little.

The first question is that they can be removed w/o damage using fishing line. WARNING! As one of our members recently found the hard way, no matter how easily they come off, do NOT abandon using the fishing line. For details, I'd PM England Green.

Second-No
FRC are pretty rare and hard to find but dealerships and even private parties dont know what they have.
I got my FRC with 5k miles on it and the private party had no idea what it was

The '99 and '00 FRC was originally conceived to be a lower cost "entry-level" Vette that was de-contented. They even proposed cloth instead of the leather interior. At the last minute the Chevrolet execs decided to scrap that idea and sell this third body style as the highest performance Vette. It came only with an MN6, Z51 and with a black interior in a limited number of colors (five exterior colors: Torch Red, Arctic White, Black, Pewter and Nassau Blue). It was also the lightest weight and stiffest of the three body styles. Originally dual zone HVAC was not available, nor was a power passenger seat, the memory package, the sport seats (actually never were even in the Z06) or fog lights.
The intent was performance without unnecessary features.
Base cost I meant, didnt know it was always manual and had the handling package! Thats exactally what I want so thats what I will look for once I sell my current car.

Actually, it's kinda hard to define base cost. Each of the three models is distinctly different in pricing when stripped of any options..with the vert being the most, then the coupe and then the FRC. But this only applies to '99-'00. But the standard package of all the performance goodies that came on the FRC if priced out on the coupe would be much more. You could get all the go-fast stuff on the FRC for less...if you put all that in the coupe it would cost more. Mine has every single option offered in late '99 including HUD, fog lights, power seat, dual-zone, Bloze w/CD changer, lighting package, cargo net etc etc. Stickered at just under $43K. Coupes could be had for less but you wouldn't get the bang for the buck that the FRC offered.
In 2001 the game changed with the Z06 intro. Coupes then became the base cost cheapness leader.
