For 21.00 I dont think you cant buy one K&N Filter, I think you will be dissapointed with the quality of this set up.
But if you want to waste 21.00 is your call!
I think the point is that you should/can swap the cheap filter will K&N washable ones. The metal Y is what most is interested in, since it's the same as the other brands mentioned.
Go to the for sale forum, and buy this Halltech Intake for 200.00 I can assure you that you will be happier in the long run! ! Beside you wont have to pay the shipping amount from Ebay! ! Thats a high shipping cost!
I'm a firm believer in... "you get what you pay for". I personally will spring the extra dough.... not only for a better part performance wise, but for peace of mind and lack of embarrassment. I'm not saying spend $500 on a Callaway Honker like I did, but at least go with a proven brand. This is your Corvette!, not your Tercel. Go used if you have too, you can replace the filter cheap.
Well I agree that is is a vette and does deserve great parts. If I had a $500 to buy a callaway and it didn't put a den't in my pocket i would certainly go that route.
But i think the key fact here is that the ebay kit is comparable to the same setups sold by places like Ecklers, etc. which are priced rediculously for essentialy the same item!!
If someone bought the Ecklers dual cone intake and posted here and mentioned he paid the $199.00 for it, everyone would say nice job.
That looks exactly like the one i bought, same color filters. Has that nipple i was talking about. And those brackets. Except I saved 150 bucks. Which i used to by a B&M short shifter from a member here.

I got the exact same one from the same vender, no problems at all, great price, easy install, nice sound, way better throttle response, WELL SPENT $45. I dont believe that it causes turbulence at the y either, mabye if it was a jet engine sucking in a ton of air.
I was really interested in this type of setup until I read Richard Newton's piece on this subject in his book "CORVETTE C5 - Performance Projects". In it he states that ".....(a Y intake system) seems like a good idea until some people found that the intersection of the two air paths created tremendous turbulance right at the juncture. The result was that LESS air was intering the plenum than with a single filter." (Linear-flow) He also stated that 1) aftermarket air intake/filters don't make the hp figures that the makers "claim" and 2) most invite water injestion into the induction system. The original GM system was intended to keep noise to a minimum and keep water out. (I'm just the messenger....)
I've always had aftermarket intake/filter system on all of my cars. The noise and the "percieved" hp gains ya know. With that in mind I'll save my money until I can afford a good linear system and include a hood seal.
I'm in a slow, calculated trip to improve the looks and a few cost-effective minimal performance mods of my '98 C5. Being retired I need to be mindful of my money.
(BTW: the C5 is the best vette I've owned or driven bar none.)
Hi HawnHog -
Did Mr. Newton provide flow bench results to substantiate this claim?
The idea that the twin-ram type intake creates "turbulence" in the intake tract and somehow will not flow well is false, proven by flow testing done by forum member RedHotZ06 (Paul) -

What the hell does embarrassment have to do with it? You will need to prove to me that the Callaway will provide more hp. What is wrong with the intake he's talking about? I bought one off of ebay and it's a beautifully welded and polished two into one with K & N filters that looks great, performs well , and fits perfectly. I paid around $60.00 for it. It's not about money. I can well afford to overpay for an intake. My Corvette is just one of my many vehicles. Hell, when I did my heads/cam I replaced my perfectly good air conditioning compressor along with many other parts including lifters, etc. just because it was easier to get at. Leaving me an extra $440.00 to mod my car with top quality components just makes good sense. I put all the best products into my car where it counts. RPM transmission, Elite catch can, Dynatech stainless setup, B & B exhaust, Futral cam, etc. and in no way will compromise on quality or workmanship. If you paid $500.00 for a Callaway or any other, you got screwed. Just deal with it and forget the sour grapes.

I hardly feel like I got "screwed" when buying the "proven" Callaway honker. I agree I paid a little much for an intake, but I don't wear Buster Brown shoes if you know what I mean

Ok now I have to ask. You bought a "proven" product? This overprice product is "proven" by who? Callaway? It's a paper filter system........why should it cost $300+............again.....paper filter........who is proven here & who got screwed? $85 just for the replacement filter....Am I missing something? IT"S PAPER...........http://callawaycars.com/store/index....tion=pricelist My $46. (including shipping) filter system is superior to stock, looks better, and for the price.....It's proven!!! to me anyway.

If you would have read the description correctly, you would have noticed that it is not a paper filter..... It is a washable cotton cloth.
The Intake is proven by all the tests and reviews from magiznes, shops, and forum members (not from Callaway). I gained the advertised 16hp for sure... dyno proven.
You are right. The actual filter is cotton fiber that is washable. That make it an $85 teeshirt. I'm sorry it is over priced regardless of the material. 16 hp is good but the system is over priced.
