Is everyone sure about this??? I thought the C5 had a factory top speed of about 187 MPH??
I looked this up not long ago. One thing to remember there are several different versions of what top end would be but I have seen 174, 175 & 176 for the coupe and 163 for the roadster.
the Z and the Non Z C5's 5th gear is very similar and both have the same final drive gear. Its the back window.
ACTUALLY...it's the soft rev limiter that the Z has in 5th gear. You can raise this soft rev limiter with tuning software and the Z will pull even higher. And in case you were wondering, a soft rev limiter is such that it just feels like power just balances out against wind resistance. The hard limiter is the one that stutters and chops power hard. 5th gear is the only gear that the soft limiter is set so you are not stuttering at the limit.
Something is not right. I have an A4, 3.42 rear with 3200 stall TC. Although I am running a little more RWHP, it should not make that much of a difference. I typically hit the mid 170's on the back straght-away at Road Atlanta. The car is still accelerating...I just run out of 'straight' track before I run out of power.

I think I remember you mentioning the soft rev limiter in another Z06/FRC thread a while back. Can you point me to more info on that? I'm not doubting you, it's just the first I've heard of this and I'd like to learn more. Mainly, what RPM does it kick in and why would GM want to limit the top end of the halo model to less than the base targa?
I do have a predator programmer left over from my 2001 C5 which I can still use to see live data, so if I hook it up what should I like for to be an indicator of a problem?????
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to change drive ratios at the flip of a switch? Well you can, as did Callaway Corvette. If you have 5K laying around. It also turns your 4-speed auto into an 8-speed.
"Torque multiplied by RPM divided by 5252 = Horsepower".
Gear Vendors is the one product that can work on both sides of that equation with more torque multiplication and keeping your engines rpm in a narrower and more powerful band.

All of you guys that are saying that your top speed is in the 140's, 150's and even 160's should have your cars checked out. The only time this would be normal would be if you have 4.10 gears or something of the sort. With 3.42 gears or lower, any C5 that is performing correctly should surpass 170 MPH.
mitsubishi_freak8,
It does not matter how fast your car will go you don't get in the 200mph club without being able to prove you did the deuce. see my avatar.
Jamey,
Something is wrong there I have close to the same mods to my 00 Vert and I have hit 168mph with the top down. Yes, I have 3:15 gears but it should not make that much difference.
Jeffy'
The problem is definitely your gears multiplied by your torque converter. What people don't realize is that although both these mods give you more power at the lower range, you lose power at the top end. I'm had my vette up to 165 and had plenty more to go. I have a forum friend who has roughly the same mods as me but has a set of 4.10 gears. He tops out around 155 or so.
This is one of the reasons why I'll never change out my stock 3.15 gears.

Here is a screen capture of the two rev limit tables in your PCM:
As you can see, the top table has the rev limit set at 6600 rpm in all gears except for 5th. That table is your normal "hard" rev limiter such as you get when you take too long to shift and you slam into it. Notice 5th gear is set at 9000 rpm. It is et that high so the hard limiter doesn't tffect it. The next table is your "soft" limiter. All the gears other than 5th are set at 9000 rpm to not effect them but 5th is set at 6600.
What happens is that a C5Z, with it's less tall 5th gear than a standard C5, happens to achieve top speed when it peeters out at 6600 rpm. It feels like power runs out because that is the characteristic of this soft limiter. Now let's say you bump the soft limter to 7000rpm, believe it or not, the C5Z is still making power and probably will pull the extra 400 rpms and achieve an even higher top speed.
And in case you were wondering, the actual top speed limiter is set at 255mph to cut fuel and 256mph to close the throttle body. But we don't have enough gear to even worry about those.

Shifts were fine, I was in OD. Car will pull to 145-146 HARD, but then it's like it just stops pulling. Haven't noticed any tranny problems and I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY with off the line performance, but I just can't believe car stops pulling at 146. With mods and 3.42 gears I would expect this around 160-165, because I understand going from 3.15's to 3.42's I'm gonna give up A LITTLE top end, but almost 30 miles an hour?????
It would help to know the RPMs @ your top end vs
any lower gear. Are you getting to redline in lower gear? Could the prob be the limiter?

will the programmer have a history function from prior use? If so u may be able to compare the data and
come back on line w/ it for help?
As mentioned above, it would be helpful to know the RPM's you reached.
It has been my understanding that with an A4.......
"Top speed is reached using 3rd gear" (1 to 1 ratio)
Attempting a speed run in 4th / (OD) the transmission will constantly try to downshift from OD to 4th.
Try a run using only 3rd.
