What octane use using
...okay maybe after a new block and a pair of turbos running enough boost to actually give me thrust. Shell 93 octane or cheveron 93 octane
But Hey, its gonna be in the mid 90's in so cal this weekend!
i'll get my $3.21 worth driving along the coast with the top down

Here in Southern California, the highest octane is 91. Of course, there are few select stations that sell 100 octane racing fuel. But that besides, I tried using some no-Name gas to save some money and it wasn't worth it... I was getting engine Ping when I drove the car hard. I've got a supercharger and the ECM has been re-tuned for 91.

When I came back to England I was worried about what octane to use as the rating system is different in Europe. One of the smart guys here published a comparison of fuels.
It turns out there are 3 reference standards; Motor octane number (MON), Research octane number (RON) and Pump octane number (PON) which is an average of the first two. The test uses a reference engine and the Motor Octane Test is run at a higher temperature and RPM but the Research octane test gives a higher number and so European manufacturers quote RON. In America, gas stations use PON.
In practical terms, the numbers can vary by as much as 2 grades
RON MON PON
90/ 83/ 86.6 (US Regular)
92/ 85/ 88.5
95 (UK Unleaded)/ 87/ 91 (US Premium)
96/ 88/ 92
98 (UK Super Unleaded)/ 90/ 94
The two types of gas available in Europe are Unleaded and Super Unleaded. I'd prefer to use Super and top up with that when I can. Living out in the sticks the local stations only sell regular Unleaded (95RON). I've been using that and so far no problems with pinking. There are no Chevron stations but Shell is reasonably common and they have a similar additive to Techron in their V Power gas.
So there you have it. If you ever bring your Vette to Europe you know which gas to use.
