Default Help please! Germany Autobahn bound

Does anybody have a knowledge of shippers to Germany? planning on taking the Black Beast to drive the Autobahn.

I was there before but only had a rental Volvo V40 wagon, maxed out at 115mph.
I believe I can do a little better with da Beast!

Anyone been on it with their Vette?

Thanks for any info,
Jeff

I heard on MSNBC that they're going to set a speed limit of 80mph on the Autobahn very soon.

85% of the 'bahn has an 85 mph limit already, the zealots are arguing over the remaining 15%.

Default Autobahn & Shipping Experience

I've shipped several cars to Germany at government expense. I shipped an 850csi, M5 and M6 back to the US at my own expense. If memory serves me correctly the cost was around $1000-1200. Port of embarkation in the U.S. was Newark; absolutely hassle free.

Now let's talk about the autobahn. BE prepared to get your lunch eaten at some point. And when you do get your lunch eaten, it's not going to be by an exotic Porshce, Benz or Bimmer. It's going to be by a sleeper in the form of a Opel GT station wagon or a Volkswagen GTI.

I've been cruising on the autobahn at 250 -260 kilometers and a station wagon has put the left blinker on me in the fast last. Damn!!!!

So good luck and buckle for up for safety

You'll find the rates are different from the West Coast. I shipped my car back from Galveston when I was in TX and it was about $1000, roll on roll off. Its cheaper from the East Coast. Its also more expensive to ship East to West so check out the rates for both journeys.

I used Rinkens in LA this time and the container was $1900 for 2 cars, although mine were coming to UK. Add to that agents fees in Europe which worked out at the equivalent of another $800. Marine Insurance is a good idea and its runs at 2% of value.

The actual journey is about 3 weeks on the ship but mine were actually in transit for 8 weeks with the delays at each end.

Christoph handled all my arrangements and he was excellent:
christoph@rinkens.com

I plan to make that trip in the not too distant future. I need a picture on the Nurburgring

I'm in Germany at least 1 week every month so I drive on them all the time. I've topped out several vehicles at 260kph which converts to 161mph, very fast if you don't do it often.

Autobahn translates to highway in English, their just straighter and built a whole lot better than the roads in the US. Most of the major highway there were designed and built by Hitlers boys during that time.

Contrary to popular belief, the Autobahn has speed limits already and has had them as long as I can remember. The speed limits vary in range from 80kph to 120kph. Now with that said, there are many stretches of the Autobahn with no speed limits. Their indicated by round signs outlined with a black circle crossed by 5 black lines at a 45 degree angle. This is where you go for it....

The overall safety record of autobahns is comparable to other European motorways, and motorways are safer than other road types. A 2005 study by the Federal Minister of the Interior indicated that there were an equal number of accidents per kilometer on the autobahn in sections without any speed limits.

Since the mid-1980s, when environmental issues gained importance and recognition among lawmakers, interest groups and the general public, there has been an ongoing debate on whether or not a nationwide general speed limit should be imposed for autobahns. Typically a car's fuel consumption increases with speed, and fuel conservation is a key factor in reducing pollution. Safety issues have been cited as well with regards to speed-related fatalities. The opposition to a general speed limit maintain that such regulation is unnecessary because only two percent of all German roads would be affected and because better fuel economy even at high speeds has been achieved in most modern cars. Moreover, recent accident statistics supposedly don't lend proof that traveling at high speeds is that much more dangerous.

Twenty years after the beginning of this debate, there are no plans by the federal government concerning such a speed limit.
