Iam about to buy a 99 corvette with a head/cam package and full exhaust. The only problem is the x-pipe has no cats. But the seller is giving the stock cats. Can i just take it to a shop and have them weld the stock cats on the aftermarket x-pipe and hook it back up to the rest of the exhaust? If so how much (approx.) would this cost? Or is there anyway to pass emissions without cats? Any answers/suggestions would be greatly appreiciated.
I would ask seller to have it brought to a performance exhaust guy for the right answer and bargain accordingly. Here's why I'd be leary:
I bought a car in Indiana (no emissions), brought it to Massachusetts. Failed emissions.
Replaced high flow cats (found they were gutted)
Failed emissions again
Replaced 2 O2 sensors
Failed again
My canadian car just wasn't meant to pass here. I had to detune some to get a sticker.

All I can tell you is there is no way it will pass emissions without the cats, so beware. Also, there is no guarantee that the cats he is giving you are any good either. It's possible that you could get stuck with the cost of new cats. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure it's legal to sell a car with the catalytic converters removed since it's a Federal requirement. But I could be wrong.
You dont say what state you live in but if you are in the Republic of Kalifornia the head and cam package could sink you everything has to be CARB legal with numbers or it wont pass....Good Luck....but be were it could be a real headach
2k2C5 is correct, it is against federal law to alter exhaust. You don't have your state in your profile, so not possible to know what your smog laws are. I do know seller is responsible for any alterations to smog on the car in any state. Work a deal with the seller, he is liable for alterations.
