I think the GTO was a great car. It was exactly what it was in the 60's . Pontiac took a 2 dr plain jane coupe and put a big engine in it. Its a practical comfortable performance coupe. It makes a great daily driver. If I was looking for another car it would be high on my list. In a couple of years they will be one of the best bargains out there due to lack of popularity. I think one of the big problems was the price of it brand new was too high which wasnt the case with the original GTO.

Spot on. Two different cars, two different markets, and tons of biased opinions without any controlled environment to verify stats. I have been humored by this thread, so thanks for that lsx24. This whole thread is good for nothing but exposing owners' opinions, biases, and personalities! I'm baised to the Vette as it meets my overall requirements for a "weekend toy". Others choose different vehicles for different reasons and *I* fully respect their choice. However, *I* won't go join their vehicle's forum for the intentional purpose of harrassment. IMO, this thread is done...

http://www.autozine.org/countach/countach_7.htm <---is that the car your passing? My car outperformed those numbers when I was stock. Once again. Your car is slower than mine. Being cocky is fun!
As a matter of fact, that is the car I was passing, and to your point, our cars, stock, with a value of $20k, out perform a car that sold for $220k.

Jay Leno said it best, when telling Shuan White, "I have millions of dollars in cars and I drive my Z06 everyday. Its by far the best sports car I own, its great"

If your so smart, why would you willing to pay high price tags, for less performance, based on a name?

My car was more than double its worth when I bought it, along with my house, my Land Rover, ZX-10 and my 300C, I would say the car is expensive. You probably picked yours up, 5 years old, and you live in a dorm or with your parents. News flash, try buying one brand new while paying a mortgage.

A vette is expensive, compared to 90% of the vehicels purchased today.

PS...your like that "Bench racer" with the GT...nO. "My car is faster than your car" We may never know, if it makes you feel good to think that, knock yourslef out. You have been driving for 7 years, racing for 3if your lucky.

Corvette= true "American sports car" engineered and designed for one purpose- raceing. For Americans by Americans

GTO= Aussie POS. w/American muscle.

I think if more of you actually raced your cars, you'd be a little more humble about cars with similar drag racing performance.

I put the fun in dysfunctional - I have a C5 vert, but I constantly beat an 06 GTO with my 06 SSR LS2, 6 speed. My neighbor has an auto GTO and we run all the time at a nearby road out by a swamp. My 5k lb truck blows the GTO away about 3rd gear. My vert launches way faster than the SSR...he wont race the vert. The fuel shutoff for the SSR is 122mph and by then the goat is about 4 lengths behind...talking about the Aussies, I wish I could get my hands on a Ute.

You weren't comparing Vettes to 90% of the vehicles purchased today. You were comparing them to Ferraris, Lambos, and Bentelys. I also wouldn't be proud to claim my 99 Vette can beat a Lambo 13 years older than it. Different era. Lets see an stock 86 Vette keep up with that 86 Lambo. Regardless of who wins. You would still be driving off in a Vette while the other guy is in a real exotic. Performance isn't all that matters to some people. Thats why they buy them

The ls2 is no joke. Only heads/cam/gears away from running 10s in the GTO.

First off, look at my screen name. I came from an 04 GTO with just over 400 hp to my 02 Z06.
I don't understand the GTO bashing that's going on here. Most of it is just ignorance. Somebody said it a few posts back, the original GTO was at the time a plain *** family car with a huge motor stuffed in it. It is 40 years later looking back that the style is so radical looking. Now to performance. For straight line speed, with about $400 worth of mods done to my 04 GTO I could hang right with about 90% of the C5 Vettes out there. Obviously it doesn't corner or stop like a Vette, but again with VERY VERY little work, it was every bit as good as any mustang, camaro, or trans am. It had a really good and in control feel, even at the edge.
Overall, the car is built much better than a C5. No plastic crap interior snapped together, no cheap leather on the seats... EVERYTHING is very solid.
Obviously we're on a Vette forum so the opinions are going to be biased, and I'm not trading my 02 Z06 for another GTO anytime soon, but the bashing of the GTO is unwarranted. It is a great car overall, and apples to oranges to compare it to a Vette. Compare it to the M3, G35, mustangs and every other car in it's class and it is untouchable as long as you can get over the emblem on the front.

After reading a lot of these posts again. I didn't find a single person that actually owned a GTO that bashed them. Only those who "know somebody" or have driven one for a grand total of 3 minutes. Seems to be a lot of people who really don't know what they are talking about despite what they think.
