So the catch cans... I know that if I ask a question here wether or not you need one, 99/100 folks will say that I do need one. I've got an '02 coupe with somehwere between 13 and 14 thousand miles on it, and am debating the catch can.
So a couple of questions...
1.) What problem does having one of these cans prevent?
2.) Where can I look to see symptoms that I do/do not need one?

Much of the "blow by" is being sent into your intake on the LS1 and LS6.
The catch can "catches" this blow by between the PCV valve and the intake and collects it in the can which you can clean out ocassionally.

Theory is that if you don't drive hard you probably don't need it. On the other hand I just saw a posted photo of the inside of an intake that supposedly hadn't been driven hard and it was full of oil mist.
It isn't at the top of my "mod" list but that photo moved it up several notches.
If you drive hard, get it soon. If not, wait with me for the next Group Purchase discount.

Does anyone have a picture of their catch can on the car. I have always heard about them on the vette, but never see anyone with them. All this talk recently has got me thinking I should put one on. Just dont want it to be an eye sore under my hood. Thanks in advance.
I don't drive real aggressive most of the time. I have an '01 Z06. I bought and installed the catch can after reading all the post about the oil in the intake and it's possible effect on the mass air flow sensor and other sensitive engine parts. I was like you in questioning whether it was necessary with my style driving. I mostly drive the speed limit with the occasional spirited driving and only occasional high rpm range (hard not to when you drive a vette). I checked mine after it was installed for one month and it did contain about 2 oz. of oil that would have been in my intake. It looks like it belongs so it is not engine clutter. I bought the red one from Elite Engineering to go with my QS. Not unhappy or regret it at all. It does what it was designed to do.
That's a great looking product. Beautiful machining.
However, it's bling in my opinion. For my style driving, the LS1 happily digests any blowby.

Does the 01 z oil burning problem increase the value of the catch can if the piston oil rings havent been changed?
I would not think so, but don't know for sure. My '01 is not an oil burner as I easily make it to 3000 miles without adding any oil. I would think that oil blowing by the piston rings is different from what would be caught by the catch can.

A bit of upper cylinder lube never hurt! Bling in most cases.

I thought i was going to need one but
i dont think it is a issue with the 03 and 04.

I don't hammer my AE very much at all. I read about the catch can and decided to make my own. The end of a long story is that I get a couple ounces of oil every month. I only have 22K on the clock and I think that this amount is a bit much.
mmmmm. i dont know,i think i am still on the fence on this issue,
i just put my first 5,000 miles (15k total) on my 04 with and used less then a 1/3 of a quart of oil.

I don't think you can judge the need by oil consumtion. Most of the oil goes into the intake in a near fume state. As it slows and makes significant contact it begins to re-liquify and puddle.
What my pictures don't include is that I added an inline paper filter (see thru design) after the can to see how much gets past. I still get significant discoloration in the paper but no puddling inside the filter.
To be honest, I did it just to see what effect it made, and in that I built my own for well under $30 it is painless.
