As the proud owner of a 2000 coupe!!!! Use the GM product recommended. It WORKS!!!! The striping on the Silver Bullet is in great shape. Cheap substitutes equal expensive replacement ahead. The good stuff holds up to UV better as well. Not just opinion but tested FACT
Found my dielectric grease at Pep Boys. Wasn't cheap (about $6.50 a tube), but I'm sure it was cheaper than a dealership (GM part). It just so happens I removed my targa top today, and did the stripping around the top.
There is an alternative to GM as a source it is a Pool and Spa Lube. Barrier
Funny this came up. I was in a Leslie's getting some stuff for the pool the other day, including the pool lube. I asked the clerk if it was silicone based. She replied it was. As I was leaving I said "Great, I can use this on my spark plug boots!" She looked at me like I must have forgotten to take my meds that day.
Go to your local ACE HARDWARE and ask for silicone grease. Should be in the plumbing dept. by faucet repair. Comes in a little tub with a snap close cover. ACE # 4095667. Sells for about 4.00. Sell it all the time and use it on my weatherstripping.

If only I could I think the nearest may be Cape Hatteris
If you want to keep the strips good on the rubber seals I'd suggest the adams polishes VRT product. It's 10USD and it keeps my seals looking brand new without having to redetail my car as these greases will do or attract dirt onto the rubber. I've used the VRT for a few years and it makes a big difference, the rubber has the new look and is not losing it's form or seal. www.adamspolishes.com

I am not surprised you can not find it in England. A lot of british cars use Lucas electrical systems, Lucas is just a little ahead of Ben Franklin when it comes to understanding electricity. Their light bulbs are more like flash bulbs, etc.
Dieletric grease comes in those little packets for 99 cents. Like 1/16th of an ounce. I like to go to Autozone and tell them that I need a gallon. How much?? About $1000. For real. Check it out.
My wife complains because her fingernail polish is only $800 per gallon. Some of THAT STUFF is $5,000 per gallon. Check it out--for real.
Last item. Time to hit the sack: Kangaroos do not have belly buttons.

You're way behind the times. You're thinking of the old MGs. 6V positive earth and the tendency to turn on the wipers when you select the turn signals Its all changed now
BTW, the Chinese own Rover and the Germans own the Mini, Rolls Royce and Bentley. Its a push to find a Brit owned car company.
At least Prodrive just bought back Aston Martin and I think Lotus is still Brit
Not to worry you but Mr Boeing buys his electrical gear from Lucas, so if you're worried you may want to think about using an Airbus for that next flight
Oldvetter,

Glad to hear that situation has changed. We used to call that organization "Lights Out Lucas" or "The Prince of Darkness."
I guess I'd better not elaborate on the electricals of the Fiat Spyder I used to own, which alternately shut the car down, sent the car down the road without me once (really), and later simply caught on fire.
